I had a good Saturday night out the other week. A few games of pool, then into another bar where I got chatting with some Hispanic tourists from LA about the nature of second-generation immigrant identity. A good time was had by all and I Glided home to my bed. The problem came six hours later when I was awakened by my son at 6am. Since becoming a dad I have found hangovers and kids don’t mix – I no …

Wrightbus has failed to find a buyer for the company and has been forced to go into administration with the loss of over a thousand job. From the BBC report: In the last six years Wrightbus has donated more than £15m to Green Pastures, a religious charity led by the firm’s majority shareholder …

The importance of doing what you can to improve your health…

The wife’s uncle in America has died. Years ago he was like a lot of the population. He was gaining weight, not an unusual situation in this modern world of cheap junk food and sedentary lifestyle. The doctor diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes and prescribed him lots of pills and potions, so far a familiar tale. But what he did next shocked us all – he turned vegan. He had conservative views on many social matters, so I didn’t …

Today is the 40th Anniversary of the Assassination of Lord Mountbatten and the Narrow Water Attack…

The recent BBC Documentary ‘The Day Mountbatten Died‘ is well worth a watch. Our family used to go on holiday every year to Mullaghmore,  County Sligo. It is an area I am very familiar with. Was it bravery or arrogance that Mountbatten would holiday in Ireland every year at the height of the Troubles? Whatever the case may be, there did seem to be remarkable complacency around his security. Leaving his boat unprotected in the bay did seem remarkably lax. …

50% of people in Northern Ireland now describe themselves as neither unionist or nationalist…

It seems ‘Generation Neither’ keeps growing. For years many commentators considered the middle ground a liberal myth. But the recent election success of Alliance and the Green Party has shown that more people in Northern Ireland are abandoning their traditional tribal allegiances. The latest research comes from the 2018 NI Life and Times Survey. It is clear that the middle ground is going to decide the fate of NI in terms of if we stay in the UK or unify …

Harland and Wolff to go into administration today…

It looks like the end of an era today as Harland and Wolff is due to go into administration. The company that once employed 35,000 people is now a mere shadow of its former self, employing just 130 currently. With so few jobs the economic loss is not that great, people with light engineering skills are in high demand and I imagine most workers should have no issue getting reemployed. It’s more what the shipyard represents in terms of our …

We are now 900 days without an Assembly…

Today we hit the milestone of 900 days without a a functioning locally assembly, only 3 months to go before we hit the magic 1000! I imagine the view of most people is a collective shrug of the shoulders. Life goes on, the sun comes up and the bins get emptied. In the interests of promoting recycling (and the fact its a Friday afternoon and I want to go and lie of the sofa), I shall repeat my words from …
