Emma Pengelly to become the new Jnr Minister in OFM/DFM

This rumour was doing the rounds last week, but in my ignorance, I thought it unlikely due to Emma’s role in the DFP committee and the fact she has only been there as an MLA for a few weeks. But Peter Robinson is set to appoint Emma to replace Michelle McIlveen as the new Junior Minister in OFM/DFM.

Speaking to Rebecca Black in the Belfast Telegraph today, Emma says;

I am looking forward to the challenge and also the opportunities that it provides,

I come from having been a special advisor in the department, so I will obviously be aware of all of the key issues it has been involved with in the last eight years.

Well i didn’t support the flag protests, but you are right it was all my fault, I produced the leaflet, and wound the mob up.
then i didn’t give leadership to the kids breaking the law.
Neither did i get a well paid job out of it.

The Working Class Protestants of NI believe that they sacrificed their sons to allow them to live today in a part of Ireland that would not discriminate against them by a Church to ALLOW THEM TO BE LEFT WING !

  • William Carr

could you explain that to me please.

WW! was all about King and Country, could you perhaps show me the left wing movement that resulted from it.
Perhaps you could show me where in the covenant it refers to “LEFT WING” perhaps you could also point out the left wing credentials of the Northern government formed after WW1.

  • T.E.Lawrence

Ask Jeremy ! He seemed to do well out of us fighting for the Union Jack !

  • William Carr

I am asking you, you are the one making the claims.
And who would Jeremy be? is he even relevant here?
I think my point is fair and i also think you should back up (your strange claims) it bodes badly for any left wing campaign built on a imagined debt (do you really think the Tories or anybody else cares about those brave young men who wasted their lives in 1916) from 100 years ago that you cannot defend the links between that debt and modern left wing politics.

  • T.E.Lawrence

Here it is William – Rowland Street – Sandy Row – 1973 – Loyalism !

  • William Carr

this has what to do with the Somme exactly! it is taken nearly 60 years after and seems completely inrelevent.
Perhaps i could suggest that if you wish to build a left wing party you get a bit more up to date.
Certainly terrible conditions 40 odd years ago but very little to do with either now or 1916.

  • T.E.Lawrence

I would suggest that you go into them backstreets of Loyalism and try to understand why their circumstances has not improved ?

  • William Carr

I am trying right now and failing to get anymore, could i ask again (from your good self)
How does the Somme fit into the whole left wing thing?
How does conditions in 1973 fit in with either the Somme or modern day!
Is the Jeremy you referred to Gerry Adams and if so why would you suggest i ask him about the state of left wing loyalism, Can you not produce a spokesman of your own,
Educate me on the state and history of working class loyalists, are they different from the working class protestants that i know who don’t vote PUP.
And could the reason that the lot of working class protestants has not improved be maybe because there are to many people going on about the Somme, flags and keeping themmuns out to focus on real working class politics.

  • T.E.Lawrence

(What makes a Working Class Boy be A Soldier for the Crown) You miss the most important part of your debate the people who call themselves Loyalists !

  • Gaygael

    Thank you. Will do.

  • Gaygael

Is final say with the local association? Or does it go to party executive for approval?

  • Gaygael

I am very curious about what single issue you are labelling Bailey with?

  • Kevin Breslin

Since there’s eight special advisors and four ministers in OFMDFM, the maths says she gets two. That’s as many as the Health and Education departments have together. Also the junior ministry is a SPADish role anyway.

  • Kevin Breslin

Yip we’re governed no better than the politicians we choose to elect are capable of.

  • Kevin Breslin

Because voting for a party that represents some of your views may stop a party representing none of your views winning the seat instead.

  • Kevin Breslin

There might not be any action humanly possible to please some voters.

  • Catcher in the Rye

um, surely their circumstances have improved ? The housing around Sandy Row is all nearly brand new, and the bottom of the Donegall Road is being rebuilt as we speak.

  • Granni Trixie

Not as far as I am aware. Infact I’m pretty sure that that
    is not the case.

  • Granni Trixie

Sorry, was being a bit of a smart ass. I was associating her lazily with enviromental issues (am I wrong in thinking that is why they are badged “greens”?)

Truth be told I usually give my second or third preference in SB to the Greens but have to say I know little about the candidate.

  • William Carr

I know why their circumstances have not improved, all you have to do to distract them from any sort of progressive tendency is wave a flag, bring up the Somme or shout themmuns.
After the flegs and the DUP got the seat back, how much consideration did the DUP give working class protestant areas.
why do i have to go into loyalist areas to learn what they think are you not a loyalist, is this not a forum for debate, why can you not explain it to me.
why can left wingers not leave divisive issues like Flegs and old battles for others and get on with building a united working class.
A divided working class wont get anywhere, in short you must decide which is most important a working class with control of its circumstances or your symbols, you cant have both.

  • William Carr

well you can fight for the crown by all means just don’t be surprised when it treats you like S%#t and by the way i didn’t ask that question you answered (What makes a Working Class Boy be A Soldier for the Crown)
My point is that while you obsess about Flegs and Parades etc you are easy to manipulate, Peter played Loyalist’s like a fiddle over the whole Fleg thing , then when he got what he wanted washed his hands and the DUP will be only to happy to do it again.

  • Gaygael

Fair enough. Not like you to comment without being informed.
Particularly being a professed resident of south Belfast and being politically engaged. Maybe your lack of knowledge about the green candidate that has been the candidate since 2011 is a little willfull?

Clare is a Marie stopes escort. A prominent feminist. A queer rights campaigner, instrumental in supporting the development of the queer greens, and long term supporter of queer equality. A social justice advocate. A proponent of radical grassroots democracy. And many other exemplary qualities beside.

Environmentalism is in the bag for the greens. It’s good to see how much we have pushed the agenda, that now every party talks about the environment. Slow learners, albeit, we were talking about these issues 30 years ago and pushed it onto the agenda. Glad that most other parties have caught up.

I see your yellow badge for Duncan and his cross community (limited to race political opinion and community background, to the detriment of gender, sexual orientation and disability) work, and trump it with a previous contest in botanic.

So if for instance, a person had been nominated by the local constiuency group, say someone that I suggested on a previous thread, could the executive overrule it? Or would they be bound by the local constiuency group?

I think you over egg alliances commitment to grass roots democracy. I am prepared to be wrong, but I think your executive would overrule it.

  • Croiteir

They all represent some of my views – that is not the problem. Perhaps it would have been a more accurate answer to say that they do not represent, or have a different view from, some of my core beliefs that are essential to garner my vote. But I foolishly assumed that people would have been able to discern that.

  • Thomas Girvan

    Do the Advisors get Advisors?

  • Kevin Breslin

Well I really don’t know the hierarchy works, I somehow doubt that an FOI request on the matter would move quickly.
