Photo of the every other day – DUP Westminster Candidates 2001

  • Kevin Breslin

14 out of 18 seats? Where else did they avoid sitting candidates other than North Down and Fermanagh-South Tyrone?
Also … What the heck is the Ulster Democratic Unionist Party?

  • Sharpie

Handsome divils. There’s a background there that I am struggling to discern – it appears to be the same in each of the photos but its difficult to quite make it out. I think it may be a theme or motif. Whatever it is – it’s very subtle.

  • The line up this year is less diverse than in 2001. Are there any female candidates?

  • Mike the First

Full formal name of the DUP I think, back then at any rate. I wonder if that’s still the case.
If I recall correctly they didn’t stand in West Tyrone, possibly not in South Belfast either?

  • Michael Lon

The DUP did not stand in FST. However, M.Morrow withdrew and endorssed ‘Independent Ulster Unionist’, Jim Dixon.

David Simpson seems to be struggling to locate the camera in his picture. He’s got one of those faces that immediately put you in mind of someone else. In his case, it’s either Ernst Röhm or a fat David Vance.
That being said, it’s always nice to see a snap of Paul Berry in happier, pre-sports massage times.

Who is the guy at the bottom, second from right?

  • WindsorRocker

Yep, they stood aside in South Belfast to let the sitting incumbent Martin Smyth unite the unionist vote. It also helped Martin shared their analysis of the time. Same in West Tyrone as Willie Thompson was no ally of David Trimble.
They didn’t stand in North Down as well as pointed out already but then Bob McCartney was a goner due to the pact between the Alliance Party and UUP when Alliance denied their North Down supporters the chance to vote Alliance in that General Election.

  • WindsorRocker

Eric Smyth – Lord Mayor during the Clinton visit. Read a bible passage to the crowd to introduce Clinton which the crowd booed but for which Clinton thanked him as they switched places on the stage. He outpolled Chris McGimpsey in that election in West Belfast.

One of these men called for a ban on Ouija boards this week, another compared homosexuals to the Shankhill butchers.

The largest party in Northern Ireland.

    Happier times indeed.

Incidentally, Kirk McCambley was about 12 years old in 2001. Just a thought.

  • Gaygael

In 2001 they had nominated 1/14 women. In 2015 they have yet to nominate a woman.

    Dup. Taking Northern Ireland backward.

And another is evidently a movie buff who proved curiously reluctant to talk about his tastes in pay-per-view cinematic entertainment.

All we know is that he favours films in the higher price band….

Anti-Agreement pact vs. Pro-Agreement pact … bit more different than we’ll make the Biggest noise for the Union vs. we’ll stop you making that noise in the name of Ireland.

  • Kevin Breslin

Needless to say, I think a pro-Agreement independent would’ve emerged in North Down to beat McCartney anyway, he lost his Assembly seat when the DUP joined the government.
