Giro d’Italia 2014: “It’s a lot more than a cycling race”

When the BBC leaked the proposed route of the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia 2014 last week it was greeted by ritual wailing and gnashing of teeth by various representatives of the ‘excluded’ west Belfast.

And with the whingeing out of the way, the official announcement was able to be welcomed with more decorum by the Northern Ireland First and deputy First Ministers, as well as the Tourism Minister and the Minister for Regional Development[And the NI Minister with responsibility for sport?! – Ed]  Hmmm…

ANYhoo…  Here are the routes of the first three stages of the Giro d’Italia 2014, so you can pick a spot to watch the cyclists go whizzing by

Stage 1 – Team time trial through Belfast 21.7km

Giro d'Italia 2014 stage1

Stage 2 – Start and finish in Belfast taking in Antrim coast 218km

Giro d'Italia 2014 stage2

Stage 3 – Armagh to Dublin 187km

Giro d'Italia 2014 stage3

Speaking as the true “Mr Cynical” who has remained totally unimpressed by the Irish Open, the G8, World Police and Fire Games, etc, etc, even the Olympic torch relay, this one has me quite excited.

Just hope the weather plays ball because if it does, some of the photos of the peloton weaving it’s way down the north coast and through the Glens will be truly epic. This is one event I actually WILL attend, looking forward to it already!

Ace, looking forward to it. The thought of Team Sky bating along the Newtonards Road – epic!
