There have long been concerns about the power of BBC Northern Ireland in the local media landscape. They have more journalists than the rest of the media put together and they very often shape what is discussed and highlighted.
Now there are positives in that the BBC has done some excellent investigation work over the years, especially with Spotlight. But there are concerns that in recent times it has been chasing more populist stories as a way to stay relevant in a fragmented media landscape.
No one comes in for more criticism than Stephen Nolan particularly over his coverage of Drumcree. Former SDLP SPAD Michael McKernan makes his views clear on the recent Stormont Sources podcast.
Is this far criticism? If the Nolan Show was not there would the issue have still been given such extensive coverage? Or is it all a case of shoot the messenger?
