#DigitalLunch returns to consider the merits and otherwise of abolishing Seanad Eireann

Live from 1pm… We are looking for your questions??

Tomorrow our DigitalLunch series returns after a long break from the Autumn. You can pick up the detail and live feed here from 1pm. In a Seanad Referendum special, we hope to have two people each from the Yes and No camps.

To be honest I am as interested in the process as the result. Either way there will be more to do if we want to improve the quality of democracy and democratic decision making.

We’re keen to hear your questions, both beforehand and live. Tweet us on #digilunch and we’ll pick them up from there, and, hoping it works we should have a question and answer app live during the broadcast.

In the meantime, let us know if you would like to see the Seanad abolished?

Society has to plan for things happening beyond the current electoral cycle, so it could be useful to have a second chamber to air alternative views. However having too many former members of governing parties fatally undermines this function. Neither is there a strong argument for tying Senators to geographic constituencies rather than national ‘communities of interest’. Maybe some groups of acknowledged importance could be allowed to nominate fixed term candidates for a national poll, with a few replaced every electoral cycle and with some measures in place to stop the house filling up with only say GAA or Trade Union people. The groups allowed to nominate could themselves be chosen by poll. Having people from the North was useful as Ireland the state tends to forget about the North.

So we elect numpties based on personality and to counteract this we let the numpties get their cronies to sit on fat salaries and mull their decisions? Really. There is a bit of intellectual snobbery at best and jobs for the boyos at worst about upper houses. Get rid.

God, just thought of what an upper house in the north could look like. I’ll not sleep well now.

That would have been the Civic Forum… relax, it ain’t going to happen… 😉

Okay, just to let you know, the No’s have it at the moment, but then I would take that with pinch of northern salt…

    Keep voting…
