Liam Adams to be extradited to face abuse charges in Northern Ireland…

Mark Simpson tweets:

Adds: The defence’s case that pre trial media coverage meant Mr Adams could not expect a fair trial has been set aside. He will face 18 charges of abuse from his daughter.

However the judge has given a short stay until Thursday (so he can remain on bail), when the matter will be mentioned again. He would normally be given 15 days to appeal the judge’s decision.

Mick, not really sure how you expect anyone to respond to this post and that may account for the low level of interest.

The reality is that Mr Adams is rightly being extradited, now it is over to the NI courts. We must let natural justice now run its course.

When we have verdicts there will be the time to relook at what Gerry knew and when.

Is it my imagination or are all the media outlets treading very carefully on this story?

  • Probably your imagination, sos, but caution is required. This is but one step in investigating the allegations and then proceeding to trial, if there is sufficient evidence to justify it.

  • Rory Carr

I would imagine that the “media outlets ” are exercising all the due caution required in order to avoid any possibility of a contempt of court in a matter that has yet to proceed to trial. Son of Sam and any others would be best advised to emulate that caution.

And,if you think that there may be an implied underlying threat in my warning, you would be right. There is. It is the threat of penalty at law which can be quite severe in cases like this. Prudence here is the better part of valour.

I really don’t expect people to comment. It’s an important stage in an important story. And as such, worthy of note.

It only signifies the Republic’s High Court has confidence that the NI Court can conduct the trial fairly. No one should infer anything more than that.

I had no intention of commenting any further on the matter.Rory Carrs strictures are patronising unless he holds some judicial office of which we were all unaware.

Just out of interest, is it possible that even restricting the discussion to the extradition itself might in some minor way be used as the basis of a challenge to the decision to grant the extradition ?

She is a great girl & I have lots of admiration for her.

    Nun,

If the judge thinks a tv documentary seen by 100.000s of people is not enough to affect the extradition, I doubt we have too much to worry about. Slugger does not carry *that* much weight.

That’s not an invitation for anyone to be stupid by the way!
