A tale of two cities

The best photograph that has ever been blogged on Slugger…. fantastic spot

  • Mark McGregor

    oracle,

Not mine, I’ve seen it in a few places today but with no credit. Happy to give one if directed to whomever had their eye in. I’d have gone tomorrow to get my own but I have strange feeling it won’t last.

  • nightrider

    That has to be photoshopped.

  • Mark McGregor

    nightrider,

It’s a wonderful, real representation of what is acceptable on walls in republican areas while provisionals and shinners whitewash out political statements supporting prisoners.

  • lamhdearg

excellent shot. a tale of schizophrenia.

  • lamhdearg

on goggle maps the building is derelict, the landlords are to be praised.

  • michael-mcivor

The uncle sam image does not suit that peaceful Republican area- especially since uncle sam is at war around the world-

  • nightrider

*If* it’s real, who authorised the billboard? Are SF not a Socialist party? it’s like putting the artwork below on the side of Conservative Central Office in London and the Tories saying as long as they paid, it’s a free market.
Still think it’s a photoshop phoney.

  • This photo is almost as funny as Northern Property’s self-promotion:

    “Northern Property will have a live human responsible for your property at all hours of the day or night.;

“We will provide a free ‘To Let’ sign which can then be put on your property to let people know that you are looking for tenants.

“West Belfast is rich in culture and don’t be too surprised if you hear people speaking in Irish.

“West Belfast is often referred to as the heart of the city.”

Mark McGregor: It’s a wonderful, real representation of what is acceptable on walls in republican areas
Is there a republican objection to house rentals? Actually, is there a socialist objection to house rentals? The other options seem to be either mass individual property ownership or state ownership of all property.
My personal preference is for individual property ownership backed up by a large and quality-regulated rental sector and a state obligation to provide shelter. But then, I’m not a republican.
As for SF (who may or may not qualify as republicans), all they suggest is “A mandatory registration scheme for the private rented sector”.
Eirigi is only a bit more pro-active. Amidst a torrent of gobbledegook I only found this: “This requires significant investment in public housing, the active involvement of communities in planning sustainable community life, investment in local services and facilities, and the immediate ending of state subsidies to developers and landlords”
So I think there will be landlords with us for a while yet.

  • michael-mcivor

Belfast Republican areas rejected eirigi in the last elections- hope there is not a huff about-

  • John Ó Néill

Would it have been an idea to use the magic wand tool on Photoshop and remove the errant telephone wire from the poster?

  • Scáth Shéamais

It’s not a telephone wire, it’s a crease on the poster. I got a shock seeing it on my way to work a few mornings ago, it was the first I’d seen the advert since it appeared in the Sinn Féin West Belfast newspaper months ago.

  • Nunoftheabove

Anyone know who’s coining it on the use of the advertising space ?

  • lamhdearg

    its real.

  • Scáth Shéamais

The ad was paint-bombed over the weekend and has since been removed.

  • seanconor

Nun the question you should be asking is ” Who owns Northern Property estate agents”

  • seanconor

michael-mcivor is it not true that Northern Properties got permission to take the republican mural down from the local Sinn Fein representative who was rejected at the last local elections by the residents of that area.

  • Lugh

Comedy is alive!! Laughed my ass off…brilliant!!

  • Mark McGregor

    Lugh,

You think that’s funny? Have a look at what the local SF cuman approved having ripped down and thrown beside the bins in an alley, instead of repaired, for a property company advertisement board!

“generations shall remember them and call them blessed”
    – apart from SF members when approached by fellow travellers involved in property development/sales/maintainence.

  • lamhdearg

why with all the suffering the irish natioalist people where subject to, are all these wimmin smiling. generations have forgoten them already.but at least the run down house has become a home.

  • Scáth Shéamais

The ‘Women in Struggle’ mural had been repainted fairly recently and was in much better condition when it was taken down than the picture above would suggest.
