21, Irish, 4 up at Augusta with 18 to play..

Rory looking good….
His parents must be so proud. Fabulous photo!
Bring it home…

,

  • Indeed. Indeed.

And I hate Sky all the more, every hour.

But, Dewi, I had expected you to focus on the big, BIG, BIG stuff.

Where’s the thread on the Tregaron elephant hunt?

  • Dewi

Good grief Malcolm – how on earth did I miss that !!!

  • Chris Donnelly

Fantastic performance by McIlroy so far. One round to glory!

  • Mick Fealty

Or not. I’m just nervous of hexing the wee man. Though yesterday was a very manly mature round. The drive shot on the 13th at Holywood used to freak me every time. Thankfully Rory has much more nerve!

  • You know you are really, really old when … you recognise more of the names who “missed the cut” than of these young fellers still in contention.

McIlroy’s youthful scamper round that tree was positively endearing: still too young to bother about posing and looking “cool”.

It’s odd to read the American commentators — most notably, this one — expending several hundred words on Woods, and then mention McIroy in the final sentence-paragraph.

  • perseus

well thank goodness here on Slugger we avoid the divisive question of Rory’s nationality:
Over at the Rob Hodgets’s BBC Blog, they’re going hammer and tongs:
comment 87 hopes to draw a line under the heated debate:
misoramen : “ok enough. we’re done. mcilroy is not british”
    irish or british
If he wins he’s British, if he loses he’s Irish
that’s the way it is with Any Murray.. MSM huh 😉

  • lamhdearg

Even if Rory (the Ulsterman) places second or lower he’s still grabed the lions share of the headlines and will reap the rewards, good for him.

  • perseus

hope he wins it and dedicates it to the family of PC Kerr.
    That’d make the dissidents sick!
    politics/sport ?

anyways have £100 on Rory, 8/11 it is written methinks
    famous last words ..yikes

  • perseus

    from RTE:

1620 Leader Rory McIlroy – a big rugby fan – included Ulster’s Heineken Cup rugby match against Northampton in his preparation for today’s final round.

    Rory McIlroy (via twitter @rory_mcilroy):

“Good luck @UlsterRugby!! Watching here in Augusta. Let’s do the double!!! #SUFTUM”

“Proud of the lads! They gave it a great go! @UlsterRugby #SUFTUM”

Unfortunately, a spirited Ulster were overpowered 23-13 by Northampton in the end. Let’s hope it’s not a bad omen, and that Rory will do the business when he gets out on the course a few hours from now……

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

aye, he’s a massive Ulster fan – rumour has it, he’s even funded a player or two…

  • HeinzGuderian

He was born in The United Kingdom………..

    Feck me pers,you take no chances boy !! I have £20 on him @ 28/1 AND £20 @ 33/! !!!!

Go ahead Wee Rory………..have your Ulster Flag ( as displayed on the Official USPGA Leaderboard),at the ready !!! 😉

  • perseus

am late on parade heinz, my bad .. lol
you’ll be a grand up + tonite lad , nice one

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

mmm, certainly not in the bag. 4 shots can be eaten up by this course pretty quickly. If Rory can keep his head and play the percentages then he should be okay. However, there’s a big pack behind him and I’d expect 1 or 2 to post low scores.

    Hope he can hold on.

  • lamhdearg

i have got some beers in, not normal for sunday night, and i am going to sit down and watch the golf, not normal full stop, lets go Rory, this is the big time.

  • Dewi

    Come on !

  • perseus

after his 63 and then 80 ( terrible rain ) in the Open last year
    the lad deserves a break.
the story of his parents dedication is also overwhelming.
He has what it takes no doubt about that .. enjoy the rollercoaster folks ..
    For God and Ulster Rory
    WTF I’m a shinner .. arrgggh!

  • lamhdearg

bad start. and others are playing some great golf, a real test of the young mans character.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

    who is this guy schartzel????

on fire = level with rory

    not looking good 🙁

  • lamhdearg

    great fourth shot on second.

  • lamhdearg

    putting letting him down.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

his putting has been poor all week. If he keeps his iron shots going, he’ll have a chance but this is a battle.

    woods on a roll!!!

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

    the future etc,

“aye, he’s a massive Ulster fan – rumour has it, he’s even funded a player or two…”

    Ferris?

  • lamhdearg

watching on bbc ,did they miss his putt on 4

  • Mark

The nightmare scenario has arrived ..

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

You can still get Woods at 15/8 if you want to offset any bets.

  • perseus

mon Rory an eagle next hole, and we’re back in business.
heinz where are ya? give us some vibes !

  • lamhdearg

gets his putting sorted he will win this

  • Mick Fealty

American crowd getting aggressively pro Tiger… What a time to make a comeback…

  • lamhdearg

    yes

  • Mark

    Sudden – death playoff ……

  • lover not a fighter

Keep your Irish (Northern if you like) fight all the way to the end Rory.

  • perseus

    predictions:
    McIlroy -13 1st
    Woods – 12 2nd
    . -10 3rd Tied

  • lamhdearg

big miss for woods he he

  • Mark

    Perseus,

I thought Luke Donald might make a charge but he’s running out of holes . Cabrera ( Sammy’s choice as a dark horse ) has that winning mentality as does Woods ….

    McIlroy , Cabrera and Woods – all 14 under – playoff !!!

We could be up all night…..

  • Mark

    Revised winning total – 13 under ……

  • lamhdearg

    tigers fading.

  • JR

Nerve wrecking stuff. It would be great to see him hold on. After Down and Ulster loosing today he is our last hope.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

rory is just not at the races. Can’t see him lasting.

  • lamhdearg

    well thats that

  • perseus

def sticking to -13 McIlroy OUT in 35, is it enough to win?
    as to others unsure,
this schwarz guy is making me nervous though 😉

  • lamhdearg

    kj ?

  • lamhdearg

about to drop 2, lucky to finish -10

  • lamhdearg

    trying to hard.

  • JR

    that was hard to watch

  • lamhdearg

lucky to finish in the top five, this is sad.

  • JR

    lamhdearg,
has anyone told you yet that your name should be spelt lamhdhearg? just wondering?

  • lamhdearg

you spell your “name” the way you like and i will spell mine the way i like.

  • JR

If you are interested, the ‘de’ in dearg makes a j sound but the ‘dhe’ makes a y sound. It happens because lámh is a feminine noun.

    Much better from McElroy now.

  • JR

    sorry, just wondering.

  • lamhdearg

anyone but woods.yank fans are getting on may wick

  • JR

‘anyone but woods.yank fans are getting on may wick’

    agreed

  • JR

That was very painful to watch

  • Mick Fealty

That’s it Rory. Don’t let it stop you from coming back. 12th not Woods finished him.

  • lamhdearg

can he not just walk off

  • Mark McGregor

I’m not a golfist but given the hype I visited Rory’s website.

Gotta admit I love seeing people that fly that rag flag as prominently as him fall flat on their faces.

  • perseus

    Ouch! poor guy, so unexpected

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

You only really appreciate the pressure Rory must be under when you see it go arseways for him and consider he has an excellent temeprament.

  • Republic of Connaught

It’s only a matter of experience and time before Rory starts winning majors. He’s a class act, but lacking a clear head when it comes to the crunch. That will come with experiences like this.

  • lamhdearg

    rag flag?

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

    Mark,

“Gotta admit I love seeing people that fly that rag flag as prominently as him fall flat on their faces”

    Feck away off.

  • perseus

sammy can you explain mcgregor’s comment
you use the red hand as asymbol.
it feels like a stupid sectarian dig to me, by MmG

  • Mick Fealty

    Percy,

‘Unexpected’? Look where the defending champion finished this year. I agree with RoC, it’s a matter of time. I would have like to have seen him win, but you have to play right to the end. That bunching yesterday left too many experienced folk in contention.

Sorry I didn’t watch Thurs and Fri now, when he was flying.

  • Mark

This was a really enjoyable thread with golf not religion been discussed in a friendly and positive manner .

Take a hike McGregor …….. and come back until you’ve grown up ….

  • Mick Fealty

BBC now easing up on their coverage of Rory…

  • JR

“Gotta admit I love seeing people that fly that rag flag as prominently as him fall flat on their faces”

Mark, if you can’t support a man from down the road who was on the bring of making history in one of the biggest sports events in the world because of the flag he has on his website there is something wrong.

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

    perseus,

“sammy can you explain mcgregor’s comment”

Not without getting at least a yellow card.

  • perseus

    s-pose Mick, I fgured he’d be ok,
having faced a number of play-offs and close calls before.
He fell apart .. just really sad.
So much of sport is in the mind I guess.
But really have you ever seen this sort of complete melt-down before?
    I haven’t , it is rare .

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

can’t watch anymore :(. car crash TV.

just didn’t look ‘right’ today. will be hard for him to get over this one.

    perseus:
So much of sport is in the mind I guess.
But really have you ever seen this sort of complete melt-down before?
    I haven’t , it is rare .

golf is a very lonely game out there – greg norman had a couple of massive collapses and I am sure there are many others. pressure must be immense.

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

    perseus,

I suppose in team games a player can often hide – but in golf no such luxury and big leads often just get whittled away as the pressure mounts – once momentum goes it seems really difficult to get it back.

  • lamhdearg

I almost went for a straight ban, in response to that comment. but i have chilled. nice trolling mark, close but no cigar.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

“Gotta admit I love seeing people that fly that rag flag as prominently as him fall flat on their faces”

Gotta luv the fact he’s a catholic and doesn’t give a toss what you think of his website 😉

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

…Rory will probably be out in the middle of the night with the chainsaw to sort out that tree.

  • Mark

Only consolation is that Heinz won’t be collecting his 1000 pounds in the morning . (lol)

Sorry about your ton Perseus …

    Hard luck Rory . you’re only a bairn !!!

20 more years playing at the top level , bound to win at least seven or eight majors ….

  • perseus

    sure, the future’s bright
and you can’t practise for those moments
it is experience only that counts.
    getting over the line ..
twice I’ve been on 4/4 in chess tournies
only to finish 1st= and 2nd
too much partying+ not enuf sleep didn’t help 😉

  • perseus

funny comment Mark.. like it haha
yes sammy I admit preferring team games
to support for exactly the reasons you give

  • Dewi

    blah blah blasted blah

  • lamhdearg

    kj missed that chance.

  • RepublicanStones

Well done to Mark for ‘stereotype re-enforcement’ award of the day.

Awarded to you from the lovely folks at the nation of begrudgers.

  • Mick Fealty

Once we get over the fact we have two world class Northern Irish golf players, he’ll do find. Wee mans a genius. Just needs one more day of top class golf in him t beat the rest of the world!

  • At least we won’t have Wendy Austin on Good Morning Ulster behaving all mumsy. Keep it detached but positive GMU, OTT sympathy not required The guy’s world class and he’ll be back to reinforce what we all know – he’s a certain Open champion in the making, some or all of the rest will follow.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

the nature of the collapse is pretty worrying though. You have to wonder if he can ever blank that out if he’s in a similar position again.

Hopefully he can learn from the experience.

  • Mick Fealty

Thats one of the questions he will have find an answer to. Inonly have sympathy since I have three and four putted like that many’s the time on far easier greens than those Atlantan beasts.

  • HeinzGuderian

S’funny……….the wee man was doing all right until thiis dopey thread appeared and everyone started jumping on the bandwagon !!!

Greg Norman had a 6 shot lead in The Masters, and lost. Only last year,Dustin Johnson had a 3 shot lead in the U.S.Open and lost. Nick Watney had a 3 shot lead in the USPGA,and yes,you guessed it,he lost !!

Next time Rory gets into contention,do me a favour, keep your scuddy feckin’ comments to yourselves !!!!!!!! 🙁

  • lover not a fighter

Well if you are going to have a collapse they you might as well have a spectacular collapse. And that was a big un.

I suppose thats the kind of thing that you’d expect to be happening to an normal 21 year old.

Ya see the Tiger was’nt normal when he was the young un and see how that turned out in the long run ! ? ! ?

  • Mick Fealty

It was more exuberance rather than a serious attempt at tempting fate… and I doubt there was any cause and effect..

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

“Ya see the Tiger was’nt normal when he was the young un and see how that turned out in the long run ”

Some Celtic Tigers are made of stronger stuff.

  • Mark

    Heinz ,

Sounds like you’d spent your winnings already …

Never count your catholics before they’ve hatched !

  • HeinzGuderian

    Mark,

You could actually hear me counting my winnings ?? 😉
Your religious analogy is lost on me………thankfully !! 🙂

The point I am making,is Wee Rory was doing swimmingly before Dewi Boyo decided to jump on the bandwagon………….then the wheels came off………..all at once !!

Slugger Scuds…………hold your heads in shame !!!!!

  • Dewi

All my fault I admit it…

  • lamhdearg

if anyone scudded the boy, is was chris evans with his pre 4th round party talk (bbc2), and Heinzy compare your first comment on the thread with mine, chickens where indeed being counted by 1 of us, as for Rory, there are not many people in the western world who have not heard of him after this, more power to his elbow, the cash will come Roring in.

  • I| must be behind the ball. In all the time I’ve known about Rory, I’ve never once thought to ask whether he was one of them or one of them uns. Thanks slugger

  • HeinzGuderian

Just read your…….” can he not just walk off ” question,lam………..He was a Multi Millionaire before The Masters,so I don’t think he has to worry about money !!

dewi boyo tried to score a cheap sectarian point, with this dopey thread……………then the bandwagoners jumped on…………you just couldn’t leave the Wee Man alone, could ye ??

Well here’s a free tip, from The Master ( of disaster ) himself…………young Rorald will win a Major,by the end of the season !!!

Now feck away off, back to your sectarian bear baiting, and leave sport,to sportsmen !!!! 😉

  • ItwasSammyMcNally

    HG,

“dewi boyo tried to score a cheap sectarian point, with this dopey thread”

    On the Schnapps perchance?

  • Dewi

Cheap sectarian point? Sorry – where?

  • HeinzGuderian

    IWSM………….no !! 😉

    A cheap,sectarian shot Dewi…………..the only consolation,it blew up in your face !! 🙂

Like I said, next time leave the Wee Ulsterman alone…………..stick to Land of my Fathers………….my Fathers can keep it,boyo !! 😉

  • Dewi

Heinz – forgive me but what on earth are you on about?
