Empey: “We have largely won the battle on double jobbing…”

Unlike Peter Robinson (who “wants to cling on”), Sir Reg Empey tells the BBC that he will stand down if elected to the Westminster seat for South Antrim: “If I win I will cease to be an MLA…” And a minister to boot… It remains to be seen with his run at South Antrim is a viable one…

sir reg is a true unionist……he will change his mind after the election, for the good of his party, you know.

  • NMCNSA

He is a man of the highest honour and integrity! He has clearly stated what he intends to do which Willie ‘Little Voice’ McCrea has not!

  • Alias

If he fails to get elected in South Antrim, he will have left himself wise open to competitive claims that his position in Stormont is his second choice option, having failed to secure the endorsement of the electorate for his first choice option. That puts him in a defensive position, and will duly be used to undermine him.

  • NMCNSA

Lets let the people of South Antrim decide before anyone starts to get too concerned regarding Sir Reg.
After all a man like Wille McCrea who keeps dubious company (Billy Wright Leader of the LVF Drug Gang who know have a strong hold in the Ballycraigy estate in the heart of South Antrim) shouldn’t be that hard to beat?

  • Alias

I agree that Sir Reg is the best candidate. But as you say, if he can’t beat a long-running joke like Willie, then that will destroy his credibility. Well, it won’t because NI politics is a parallel universe…

  • NMCNSA

time will tell as they say

South Antrim is an interesting one. Not so long ago (aye ok, 7 years ago) it was close between DUP and UUP. Seems like Reg has picked the primary viable seat for himself.

I think its good for politics that double jobbing has effectively been jettisoned. A new generation of talent will be allowed to enter politics in June regardless of who wins. Mark Durkan is to be commended for also goving up his MLA post if he is elected.

    What about Margaret Richie ?
If she gets MP -South Down will she give up MLA
SDLP- WHATS IN IT FOR ME
she gave up her Council Seat in line with SDLP Policy on double jobbing as a MLA
Doubtful if she will give all that up
she will tell all and sundry if Peter Robinson can triple job as MP MLA AND MINISTER so can I
    sheer piggery and greed
