Money isn’t everything…

THE Northern Ireland Assembly Members Bill has just been rushed through in the ‘wash-up’ before Parliament is dissolved. UTV’s headline is misleading – Bill to end ‘double-jobbing’ passed – as it will merely encourage members not to become MPs by only paying them one salary. They do, I think, have the ability to draw expenses if they are both an MLA and MP, and so, it is with great pleasure, I hand it over to Northern Ireland’s top experts on the subject.

Yes double expenses are maintained in all their excess. By the way it was the Tories wot down it amending the Bill against the initial advice of the Labour Party peers and NIO.

Its actually cheaper to have an MLA who is also an MP, but never let the truth get in the way of a good story

  • Drumlins Rock

yeah it would also be cheaper to get the binman to deliver the post, and sure why not the milk whiles hes at it?
I get the feeling neither job would be done right.

  • Michaelhenry

sinn fein m.p.s do not get paid for there dudy, they have saved the taxpayer millions over the last 100 years,

  • Michaelhenry

My very first Utube sighting – very clever.

Anyone noticed Peter’s gesture in the covering image is v like the Pope’s? A ‘Holy’ sign?

  • Drumlins Rock

ok, can I come watch as you suggest it to your binman? oh and make sure he knows he wont be getting anymore pay but will be expected to do all three jobs as equally well as three people did.
MH, SF MPs dont do anything as MPs, its like the Binman taking on the postmans job, but refusing to deliver the mail, even if he dosnt claim any pay the job isnt getting done!

    Michael Henry

Dont believe the propaganda. They have claimed millions in expenses. Where has it all gone?

  • Michaelhenry

the people keep electing them drumlins rock, they must be doing something right.

  • Michaelhenry

i believe in the truth,cynic2,sinn fein do not get paid because of english law,but where did these millions go to.

  • Greenflag

    Drumlin rock ,

‘I get the feeling neither job would be done right.’

So you’re not a multi tasker then 🙂 . Recent research has actually made the point that multi tasking actually takes up more time and costs more than focused attention on the one job/project etc .

There is a small percentage of the population who actually can effectively multi task and it’s about 2% . The rest of us 98% do better if we can focus on doing one thing properly at a time 😉

  • Harry J

ok, can I come watch as you suggest it to your binman?

given the roles of MLA, MP and coucillor can and do overlap you are talking bolloks.

Of course the main reason they UUP are against double jobbing is because they have only one, sorry no MPs of their own.

  • RobertEmmett

the bin men, milk men and posties actually provide a sevice for the people.

    the MLA, MPs etc don’t.

they make excuses for why the westminster is cutting our services.

really, so who deferred water charges? or froze the regional rates or kept business rates down? who introduced free prescriptions.

golly it was those nasty politicans

  • RobertEmmett

deferred water charges? you mean the new one? the one on top of the one we were already paying in our rates?

and my rate bill is up this year, but my services are being cut.

so those nasty politicans can dig out their friends and donors in the banks

  • James

“really, so who deferred water charges? or froze the regional rates or kept business rates down? who introduced free prescriptions.”

    The treasury?

  • Harry J

james the treasury didnt do one of those things in 30 years of direct rule.

and my rate bill is up this year, but my services are being cut.

    speak to your council.

If you are going to be a unhappy politician, i suppose its better to be a rich unhappy politician, Money is everything. Is it time to be brought to Book

  • So three of our MPs made it across to speak in the NI Assembly Members bill today that (i) allows the Assembly to delegate responsibility for setting salaries to an independent body and (ii) prevent MPs/MEPs claiming an MLAs salary.

Three made it across to discuss salaries.

How many made it across yesterday to discuss the Digital Economy Bill – broadband access/speeds, digital radio, spectrum allocation, the remit of Ofcom, ITV (UTV), Channel 4, Five … and the issues of digital copyright protection and forcing ISPs to rat on torrent downloaders?

    A big fat zero.

  • Scaramoosh
  • Correction to my earlier big fat zero.

DUP & SDLP MPs were in the building, and present when the speaker called for the vote at the end of the Digital Economy Bill second reading. However, they definitely didn’t speak, and I can’t find any footage showing them in the Commons chamber. (There’s no side shot at the end to see them there for the vote being called.)

  • Cynic2

Now now. Lets be clear. The Tories wanted a complete end to Double Jobbing. Labour resisted so the only way to get some control was a compromise like this. They are committed to ending it completely.

That’s why the Developers’ Unionist Party has announced an end to dual mandates – except for the First Minister of course. He has a family to feed and recent tragedy has deprived him of three of his incomes.

It’s also very expensive keeping a spouse in a private clinic – though it seems that even there we may be picking up the bill. What a surprise!!!
