New blogger: an introduction

As I have joined the Slugger team I thought I should introduce myself. Otherwise, this post is of no particular account.

So, I am the latest addition to the Slugger team. My name is Jason Walsh and I am a freelance journalist based in Dublin. As a jobbing journalist of no particular account, I have contributed to the Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Daily Ireland, the Sunday Business Post, the Sunday Times, the Guardian, the CS Monitor (Boston) and the Independent of London, some of which has been tracked by journalisted.

I contribute regularly to spiked, Comment is Free and, in my spare time, edit my own little project called forth.

Areas that I plan on covering for Slugger include economic affairs and my contention that politics is collapsing into identity.

I’ve read a few of your articles on Spiked and found them worth reading for the maverick slant. It’ll be interesting to read your perspective on Slugger.

  • DR

Keep your nose out of our business!!! whats a southerner like you doin on a Norn Iron site!!! we dont need your sort round here just you go down and sort out your own corrupt bankrupt banana republic!!!

Though i would break you in gently there mate, welcome to Slugger 🙂 we all love each other really, honest!

just one thing I wanted to ask privately, how badly screwed up are things really down there? you can tell me the truth, promise I wont tell a soul.

  • Slugger O’Toole Admin

We’re still lookin for another one or two unionist bloggers. If you wrote in last time I called for one, please chase me again.

  • Jason Walsh

How bad are things here? Almost as bad as they are up there. If things get really bad it might end up as it was here in the 1980s.

I’m only an adopted southerner and spent many a year in dear old Belfast.

Thank you. Always nice to hear that someone finds my stuff interesting.

  • Jason Walsh

For anyone who’s interested, here are a few recent(-ish) pieces (and, as far as I’m aware, there’s a story of mine in the Irish Times tomorrow with a Belfast slant):

Northern Ireland is a one-party state

The INLA ends an era – but is it too late?

No, I’m the real Irish republican

    The state and recession

Push the Protestant schools into the sea – and heave the Catholic ones in after them

I hope to have a new piece for Slugger tomorrow.

  • DC

Nice pitch which is a pity as I could have done without it.

  • Granni Trixie

Good luck Jason, hope you won’t regret putting your opinions on Slugger: I liked your modesty when introducing yourself and cannot wait for you to expand on ‘politics collapsing into identity”.

  • googoogaga

“my contention that politics is collapsing into identity”.

Not clear what you mean by this.
Is it that politics operates now through marketing techniques and language as a branch of brand identity?

Or that politics is now too much about individual’s personalities (human identity)?

Or is it that democracy doesn’t work because the internet means people only wanna hear from people who identify with the same constantly subdividing subgroup who share and confirm their biases?

    Or something else entirely?

  • Jason Walsh

Something else entirely. All will be revealed in due course.

    Granni Trixie:

It ain’t just modesty. I am just some guy.

Apologies. And apologies for calling you DR, too.

  • Drumlins Rock

nah im DR, he prob felt priveledged 🙂

how about a few funny stories jason?

  • DaithiO

    Welcome Jason.

Very best of luck and I look forward to what you have to tell us. As you know it will probably be like raw meat in the bear pit, just how we like it here.

  • Jason Walsh

Telling is what I won’t be doing, hopefully. Discussing is my plan. As for the bear pit, I’ll admit I’ve lost a few night’s sleep to things that have been said to me in the past but that’s the price of my job. Comment is Free is a pretty nasty place and I won’t say you get used to it but who want to hear journalists bleating about their hurt feelings?

God, the confusion. I was right the first time.

Funny stories? Like “Two guys walked into a bar…” kind of thing?

  • RepublicanStones

The honeymoon period won’t last long Jason, so welcome. I haven’t come across you on CiF before though.

  • joeCanuck

Yes, welcome Jason. It’s always nice to have another point of view.

Sorry Jason but you have to answer these compulsory questions before we go any further………..what school did you go to? Are you a Southern Unionist Revisionist Blueshirt or Fenian Republican rebel rouser? However fear not this time tomorrow most of the regulars on here will undoubtedly have answered those for you.

  • Jason Walsh

Yeah, I figure about two minutes…

  • OC

    1 minute and 23 seconds.

  • Jason Walsh

    truth seeker,

What makes you think that Mick and I agree on anything in particular?

  • RG Cuan

Gee there seems to be quite a few people with a lot of problems on this thread!

    Fáilte romhat Jason.
