Up to 16 people were injured this afternoon when a Luas tram collided with a bus at the junction of Abbey Street and O’Connell Street in Dublin City centre.

and..

There is an unconfirmed report that the Luas driver went through the window of his cabin and into the bus. The driver had to be cut out of the wreckage by members of Dublin Fire Brigade and has been taken to hospital.

Let’s hope he’s ok.

    Terrible

Awful, hope nobody is seriously hurt.

Lots of passengers will be dazed and seeing Euro signs.

Being on O’Connell st regularly, it still amazes me how this can happen. The Luas to my knowledge cannot run its lights, and it isn’t exactly the fastest thing in the world and the bus driver, hard to know what he was thinking, I heard the luas apparently went into the back end of the bus.

Up to 21 injuries now according to RTE News. 3 serious but stable.

OMG. I hope they will all be ok. Terrible news.

Just after passing it a few mins ago. The road is closed off to traffic until 7.30. One of the women beside me said that the Luas derailed off the tracks.

  • Walked past it earlier, as you can imagine much of the Luas line in the city centre was out of action. The driver’s compartment was practically smashed flat, and it looks like the bus pulled the front few Luas compartments off the track. If I’d been an hour earlier I’d have been on that Luas 🙁

  • Comrade Stalin

I’d guess that it was the bus driver who ran lights, not the tram driver, having seen the way those DB drivers pilot their buses around the city centre. However, we’ll have to wait and see what the investigation turns up.

must have got their lines crossed;)

Well the good people of Dublin may well be a little nervy over any SF statement about it as SF has a history of derailing things here.

It’s lucky people weren’t killed outright. Horrendous accident.
