Will FIFA blatter home nations into Team GB..?

NOT only have Northern Ireland dropped to 52 in the FIFA world rankings, but FIFA looks set to back plans for a ‘Team GB’ football team in the 2012 London Olympics. The BBC also reported that “it is thought he [FIFA chief Sepp Blatter] would be happy for all the players to be English if the other home nations refused to allow their players to take part”. In this part of the world, some unionists have taken offence at how the ‘Team GB’ name excludes Northern Ireland (ie, it should be ‘Team UK’). But since Northern Ireland would be unlikely to supply any players to an all-UK Olympic team – and I wouldn’t rule out a boycott to cover up that embarrassment – perhaps the ‘GB’ monicker would be justified for football? FIFA are set to discuss the matter tomorrow.

FIFA couldn’t give a toss about the Olympic football tournament so whatever happens the British associations need to keep that in mind.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

olympic footy is a bit of a joke full stop.

  • It won’t happen. Too much opposition in Scotland.

  • dewi

What arrogance by Coe, Brown et al.To threaten the indepedence of the football associations for such minor expediency. Yeah compete as England and let Wales compete as Wales…. In all Olympic events.

  • It shouldn’t be “Team” Anything as that usage is a dreadful acquisition from North America – for one thing, it’s redundant since soccer any level above two fellas with a ball and some sweaters for posts is not an individual sport.

In 7 years there will be a Team UK/GB in the World Cup and Euro Championship.

I don’t know what they will be called but the UK will have 1 team not 4. Watch events closely.

IFA & SFA are right to be worried.

  • 7 years!? In 7 years that might not be any UK never mind Team UK…

Is this public info, Sean? You got a link?

“I don’t know what they will be called but the UK will have 1 team not 4”

    Called Wales

  • Republic of Connaught

Team UK or team GB will be made up of all Englishmen, just like the majority of the UK state. A token Scot, maybe Darren Fletcher, a token Welshman, maybe Ryan Giggs out of retirement, and a token Paddy Protestant, maybe David Healy, will be all that will make a team UK from outside England.

England won a World Cup in 1966 without any Paddies, Welsh or Scots. They won a rugby World Cup without a Paddy, Welsh or Scot. In sport as in politics, England don’t need the Paddy Prods, Welsh or Scots. They just like control over their lands.

Will Northern Ireland goalkeeper Maik Stefan Taylor, who was born in Germany, to an English father and German mother be around in 2012.

unionist politicians should have little problem with him being part of ‘Team GB’, as he has zero connection to Northern Ireland.

Speaking of Taylors I think I’ll have more of an interest in the women’s boxing in the ’12 Olympics than the Mickey Mouse soccer tournament. Go Katie go!!

  • Given their individual memberships of the International Football Association Board, I hardly think it likely that the FA, IFA, SFA and WFA will disappear.

England won a world cup by playing at home with some dodgy refereeing decisions (and some great players as well)

  • Republic of Connaught

Actually when you think of it we have already seen a team UK playing for the Republic of Ireland back in the days of big Jack.

    John Aldridge – Englishman
    Ray Houghton – Scotsman
Alan Kernaghan – Six county heritage

All that was missing was a Welshman of some sort and it could have been team UK instead of ROI.

    Irony indeedy.

In that Case England would be under-represented.

    8/11 = 73%

England’s population is 84% of that of the UK

And just like politics, it would be all the English stars who win the trophies and put up the dosh but all the Paddy Prods, the Welsh and Scots would all benefit…. it aint called a Union for nothing…..
