Niall O’Brien seals Cup for Ireland with unbeaten ton

Match summary – Port Elizabeth: Namibia 250 & 145; Ireland 195 & 201-1 (NJ O’Brien 119*): Ireland win by 9 wickets.

Ireland’s cricketers have proved themselves as the best associate nation in the world with a comprehensive victory over Namibia in the ICC Intercontinental Cup Final. In a low scoring game the cream did indeed rise to the top as Northamptonshire’s wicketkeeper/batsman Niall O’Brien proved the difference between the sides with a memorable century as he and Alex Cusack (MOTM for his match saving 95* in the 1st innings) chased down 201. Having won the last 3 competitions surely the ICC should get Ireland some one off long form games against the likes of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe with first-class status to continue the progression of this fine side.

well I said I’d still put my money on Ireland and I was right. We are too good to be an associate but not good enough to play with the big boys. Instead of begging tests of test playing minnows Ireland needs a deal to be financed as a county side to consolidate our players in one team. There is no point of been offered a test if the counties won’t release Irish players to play. Full test plating status can follow and when it does a lot of the weaker countries had better wach out………………………

Great result after a nervy round of first innings.

I’d love to watch Ireland play Zim or Bangladesh in a test; I’d back them to share the honours at least. Well done to them and it’s great to see cricket’s impetus hasn’t been lost.

Doesn’t Ireland play as a county side in one of the major cups? Great stuff though, we’ll never emerge as a top test side, but best of the rest.

Ireland play as a county in the friends provident cup, but as always counties refuse to release players and players don’t bit the hand that feeds them by tring to much to get released.
