Unionist.tv

The redesigned UUP website has an integrated YouTube channel called unionist.tv. On it you will find portions of Sir Reg’s speech from Saturdays Party AGM. Chekov liks it.

well the redesign is a bit of a hash – terrible typography and the colours are awful. You can see what they were trying but they couldn’t pull it off. I hope they didn’t pay too much for it, actually scratch that, I hope they did.

  • I especially love the ‘UUP Women’ section. Can you really believe that in 2008 they still organise coffee mornings for the ladies?

    What dinosaurs.

  • “Can you really believe that in 2008 they still organise coffee mornings for the ladies?”

Because in 2008 women no longer like meeting up together for coffee? :-/

  • Chekov,

Michael Shilliday already compromised your neutrality on this issue!

Seriously, though, is the UUP a political party, or a little club? And in this century, why do they have separate sections for women (and young people, for that matter)? They should all be equally involved at all levels, debating issues and working for their party regardless of age, sex, disability, race, colour, or whatever (I exclude creed, because I see no evidence yet that they’ve attracted any Catholics!)

Its a throwback to the era when the ‘ladies’ made the tea and sandwiches for the real members (aka men). It shows the UUP to be still a party of the past.

    Horseman,
I’m certainly no defender of the Ulster Unionist Party, but I think John Gorman might have something to say on your Catholics point.

If he’s just a ‘token’ then I’d suppose he’s the unionist equivalent of Billy Leonard but at least Gorman’s always been a unionist.

    >>Because in 2008 women no longer like meeting up together for coffee? :-/<

  • I’d take a UUP women’s coffee morning ahead of Sue Ramsey with a ‘gadget’ any day.

  • wondering

    Michael,
Do you ever post a blog which doesn’t refer to Checkov’s site?

We all know you’re not the higest quality of blogger on the site but its really a little tiresome to only ever use a UUP proxy site for reference.

  • joeCanuck

I argued on another thread recently that the “unionist” parties, unlike other political parties around the world who keep reinventing themselves to deal with changing realities, remain stuck in a 19th century mindset.
The existence of this “women’s section” is a symptom of that.

  • Not on it about turning up for crucial council votes? Thought not.

  • hiro protagonist

Design is absolutely awful, think it only really rivals the alliance party in that regard. They have obviously tried to be trendy or fashionable but have missed the mark dramaticall, and it is lazily done, too many shortcuts.

  • J T Kirk

Well done Pavel on being able to spell like correctly!

  • Non-voter

I comment for the sake of clarity. I read this site regularly and seeing this thread I raised the issue of a separate women’s section with their Party President.

It was asked for BY their female party members at several focus groups. Also the party has been keen to reach out to female voters. Again it was suggested by party members that this would be one way of doing that.

I don’t want to get into the debate. I make no comment on how that section appears or is perceived by readers here or on the site.

I actually like the Web: as a communication tool it gets the message across, also its only as good as their PR Officers make it.

  • “a UUP proxy site”

Just to emphasise. A blog which generally supports the UUP is not the same as a UUP orxy site.

  • *proxy.

  • As opposed to the current one, which is a UUP poxy site.

  • If you’re referring to the new UUP site, as opposed to my blog, then I’d be interested to know which NI party’s site you think is better?
