‘Hillary has been making noise about having an ethically impeccable White House… ‘

She need’nt bother . At this stage the vast majority of Americans would rather have one of the more licentious Medici Popes as President than the present incumbent .

‘How I turned success into failure in 7 years ‘ could be a title for Bush Jr’s biography. Or perhaps,

‘How to give a bad name to Republicans by talking directly to God and listening to voices’

Two trillions down the tubes in a senseless war .
    150,000 Dead including 4,000 Americans .
An almost tripling of the price of oil during his term .
    America’s reputation destroyed.
    Millions facing foreclosure .
    Stock market in meltdown .

Has this f***er done anything right ?

So how are Americans feeling after 7 years of an ethically (presumably in the sexual sense) impeccable Presidency ?

Greenflag: “She need’nt bother . At this stage the vast majority of Americans would rather have one of the more licentious Medici Popes as President than the present incumbent . ”

My, it only took two posts for the topic to leap the rails. As for your assertion, were it true, it’s pity there was not more agreement on the “why” as on the “what.”

And, frankly, you’re wrong — “anybody but Bush” may sound like a clever slogan, but I would point out, with a bit of a chuckle, I can think of a couple candidates who, if elected, would make the populace look back at Bush with fond nostalga. Huckabee tops that list, although he’s likely peaked, although most of the others could wrangle a space on that list without too much work. The Dems aren’t that much of a worry — Edwards is an empty suit, Obama is all sizzle with no steak and Hillary, while probably electable in the primary, has a damned hard row to hoe in the general election — limited appeal vis-a-vis independent voters and, what with the increasing volume of mud and shite thrown between her and Obama, I can see the typical outcome of the Dems primary — a badly wounded candidate coming out of the convention.

Greenflag: “Has this f***er done anything right ? ”

Seven and a half years ago, I said I didn’t envy who got elected, because he was getting a dog’s lunch and maybe not even that much. I have little to no doubt that Gore or Kerry would have the equally large problems, they would just be somwhat different problems.

As for Bush’s accomplishments, he has expanded the American social entitlement with Medicare Part D to a degree that most Democrats would envy. They wouldn’t give back his increased education spending, but will whine about the accountability mechanisms and that “he doesn’t spend enough,” although, to be fair, these are folks who see a decreased rate of increase as a “spending cut.”

As an aside, it is amusing you’re quick to pin recent bad economic news on Bush whilst denying him any credit for the good economic news over the past several years, inheriting the collapse of the Internet bubble economy from his predecessor.

Beyond that, most of his sins are small to medium potatoes, compared to Kennedy (Vietnam), Wilson (the APL, the Palmer Raids, censorship, etc.,) Roosevelt (Interning of Japanese Americans, economic voodoo) or Lincoln (Suspension of habeas corpus, censorship, internment of political undesirables). Bush’s biggest political problem is being President in an era when these fellows misdeeds are under-taught, at best, and are often completely swept under the rug.

The current unemployment rate which is 4.6% is lower than the average for the 1990s which was 5.8% and lower than the average for the past 40 years at 6.0%. ‘it’s pity there was not more agreement on the “why” as on the “what.” ‘

The lack of financial regulation which led to the major banks and financial houses easily setting up sub prime mortgage brokers with absolutely no oversight has been the primary cause of the present ‘market’ meltdown which we see as more and more of the sub prime ‘skeletons’ are surfacing . I have not met an American this past year who has a good word to say re the undynamic duo of Bush . BTW what’s Cheney up to these days still trying to finagle a war with Iran or some other state ?

As for Bush’s sins being small potatoes ? I’m sure 2 million Iraqi refugees would not agree neither would the relatives of the 150,000 Iraqis killed in a ‘mad ‘ war .

We’ll see who’s wrong come November .Bush has done for the Republican Party what John Major did for the Consevatives in the UK .

Of course, an increase less than inflation is a real spending cut. And I think the objections are more where he spends.

And really, spending is only one side of the coin, you need to look at the balance:

‘Real After-Tax Income Has Risen 15.0 Percent Since January 2001.

‘The Economic Policy Institute reported that in 1979 the top 1% in the USA had 9.3% of all income .By 2000 this share had almost doubled to 17.8 % .Were it not for the fact that the average American family (whats left of it) was working at least 500 more hours a year in 2000 than in 1970 , mainly because of wonen’s mass entry into the paid labor force , real incomes for the vast middle group in America would have fallen even farther behind . This increase in work hours required to make ends meet , and the reduction in leisure and in time for child rearing , is also a real decline in living standards that of course does’nt show up in household income statisstics.

The experience of the two post war eras is a story of two entirely different societies . between 1947 and 1973 productivity rose by 103% nd median family income rose by almost the same amount. Between 1973 and 2006 productivity rose by 71.3% while median family income rose by just 21.9%. Factor out the extra hours worked by wives and median family income rose scarcely at all.

Between 2000 and 2006 the productivity of american workers rose by 19% . But the total increase in the wages paid to all 124 million non supervisory workers was less than 200 million in 6 years – a raise of $1.60 per worker -not $1.60 per hour but a grand total of $1.60 in higher wages per worker over nearly 6 years . LAbor Market researcher Andrew Sum of the Northeastern University Center for Labor Market Studies compares this $200 million for workers to the $38 billion paid in bonuses alone by the top five Wall Street firms during the same period !

(excerpt from ‘The Squandering of America’ by Robert Kuttner .

So what’s wrong with Americans ? Why are they not demonstrating in the streets . The French long since would have guillotined the Governments who managed to deliver such a mess ? Even the normally placid English would not put up with such obvious ‘tyranny’.

Land of the Free ? Home of the Brave – ?

My ar*e 🙁 . More like land of the top heavy and gutless 🙁 .

Time America had another revolution .

  • Greenflag

‘One further reflection of increasing economic disparity in the USA is the now far greater concentration of wealth. The wealth gap has increased far more dramatically than the disparity in incomes . In 2001 the top 1% had almost 20% of total income but 33% of total net worth and 39% of all financial assets . The bottom one third of Americans (100 million people) have an average net worth of $10,000 or less . And more than 50 million Americans have negative net worth i.e they owe more than they own . And that was before the present property market melt down.’

To be fair neither the Republicans or Democrats have done much to try to reverse the trend over the past three decades .

Where Bush has excelled is by adding to the pyre by throwing 2 trillion dollars away in a war which was ill considered , illegal and which has destabilised the entire Middle East .

Ah, yes, eeeeee-vile capitalism is to blame.

It bullshit, of course — the whole chain, from borrowers who over-borrowed or borrowed on terms they knew they couldn’t meet, are also at the core of the problem, although I shouldn’t be suprised that you didn’t acknowledge their role in the mess.

Liekwise, the problem is not a lack of regulation as much as a denial of reality — everyone imagined the market would keep going up and everyone would keep making money. Some forecast this crash, got out and came out smelling like a rose, so no metaphorical closets for said skeletons to erupt.

Greenflag: “We’ll see who’s wrong come November .Bush has done for the Republican Party what John Major did for the Consevatives in the UK . ”

Different dynamics, GF. Throw in that the Democratic dominated legislature has a lower approval than the President and this get into strange territory.

‘Ah, yes, eeeeee-vile capitalism is to blame.’

Who said ‘capitalism’ is to blame ? The point being made was that insufficient regulation of the financial institutions (as in the 1920’s ) helped to keep the ‘denial of reality’ in denial.
There is more to this economic crisis than the usual boom and bust cycle .

‘ everyone imagined the market would keep going up and everyone would keep making money.’

True for many no doubt – but the underlying economic picture is of a country in which the middle class is feeling under more pressure than ever in it’s economic history. The coming economic recession (if it’s not already here) will be the main issue in the coming election along with health care costs followed by the Iraqi war.

Like it or not the Republican Party will reap the ‘benefits’ in November .

“the exchange rate is favorable” …or to put it another way – the dollar isn’t worth shit. And what about the 40 million Americans who do not have health care?
Bush is a complete dick –
We are heading into a recession. The banking sector is a mess with greedy unregulated sub prime mortgages. We have no friends or allies left around the world because he wasted all the goodwill following 9/11. He got us into an unnecessary and unaffordable war in Iraq (which he and Cheney delilberately started).
His top environmental advisor now works for a major oil company (explains Bush’s positions on global warming and Kyoto).
Oh yeah, he thinks god speaks to him. Huge trade deficits with China and America living on borrowed money.
Will I keep going? We are taxed out the yazoo but unlike the Europeans we don’t get healthcare or university educations for our kids from the tax base – no that all costs extra (plenty extra). But we do get bombs and spend more on military expenditure than all other countries in the world combined. Fuckin priorities?

Presidents Clinton faced a barrage of pre-approved questions today at their first press conference after their inauguration.

The presidents had a constitutional expert on hand who stated that there was nothing in the constitution that prohibited the spouse of a president elect from having their severed head grafted onto the neck of the president elect.

Presidents Billary Clinton conceded that the constitutional position on being addressed as “Presidents Clinton” was still unclear, but since all the constitutional experts present agreed that it was just a goddamn piece of paper they were going to overlook that.

They said that they would stick by their promise that the price of a loaf of bread would not rise above $1,000, but refused to elaborate on the availability of said bread.

The presidents assured the general public that the work camps would continue as long as the freedom of America was being threatened, and that a return to people’s homes was something they were going to give serious thought to in their first, second, or perhaps third term of office.

The presidents said they were going to invigorate the economy by legalizing cannibalism and the prostitution of one’s offspring.

The presidents stated they would continue with the surge into every country in the world in the search for terror, and that everyone in the world would be drafted to continue the noble struggle.
