Abolish the Northern Ireland Office…

and the Scottish and Welsh ones too, says cheeky LibDem MP Lembit Öpik, and merge them with the the Department of Communities and Local Government. If even Peter Hain *spit* can run Wales and NI at the same time, and Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander also handles the Scottish brief, surely it’s not impossible? Mark Devenport seems to reckon Gordon Brown is unlikely to want to “engage in such major surgery before justice powers are devolved here, and given that the Scottish question could be an increasing headache for Whitehall”. Still, Lembit’s call has a lovely ring to it: “Abolish the NIO.” Mmm… I’m liking it more every time I read it.

“Abolish the NIO.” Mmm… I’m liking it more every time I read it.

Gonzo, if you convened a meeting at Hazelwood Primary, you’d be looking at a full house.

Abolish the NIO, a movement led by 400 pissed off 5 to 11 year olds. soundtrack? how bout ‘Brick in the Wall’

  • Quite simply – ‘The NIO Must Go’

  • DaithiO

    He’s a Cheeky Boy!

  • Comrade Stalin

Nice soundbite, but I don’t think much would change. The NIO would be replaced by whatever government body would be set up to run reserved matters. Then, all the ex-NIO civil servants would transfer to that body and continue on as normal.

  • Oilibhear Chromaill

Lembit must be having a good old time with his new enamorata as heis thinking is clearer than it has been. Of course, he shouldn’t stop at abolishing the NIO, he should also seek the abolition of ‘reserved matters’. All power should be devolved to Stormont, policing, tax raising, broadcasting, foreign affairs. Let there be an end to meddling ministers from the Home Counties in the affairs of the North.

  • darth rumsfeld

I know I’ll regret asking this but has an “enamorata” anything to do with bottoms Oilibhear?

  • jaffa

“All power should be devolved to Stormont, policing, tax raising, broadcasting, foreign affairs”

You missed out defence. How come the RIR are in Inverness and the Black Watch in Holywood? NI should charge the rest of the UK for renting our defence forces rather than accepting the BW as a “subsidy”.

I’m pretty sure there are Home Counties recruited soldiers in Aldershot and ROI seems able to station Irish recruited defence forces on Irish soil without disaster.

  • BogExile

I have written to the NIO demanding the abolition of Lembit Opik.

  • Pounder

Isn;t this the dude who dumped the lovelly Sian for a fecking cheeky girl? If thats an indication of his judgement skills I won’t trust the fecker if he told me water was wet.

  • dodrade

Didn’t Northern Ireland come under the Home Office at Westminster before direct rule?

  • Quaysider

Not the “devolved broadcasting” thing again? Oilibhear didn’t have a problem with BBC The Province when he worked for them.

  • Mike

    Oilibhear –

“Of course, he shouldn’t stop at abolishing the NIO, he should also seek the abolition of ‘reserved matters’. All power should be devolved to Stormont, policing, tax raising, broadcasting, foreign affairs. Let there be an end to meddling ministers from the Home Counties in the affairs of the North.”

So you seek an independent Northern Ireland then?

  • Dewi

He’s an idiot – filmed “Have I got news for you” instead of attending Welsh Lib dem Nat Exec to discuss coalition strategy in Assembly. Hot tip for General election…….Tories take Montgomery…
