Two Irelands whooshing up FIFA table…

Both the Republic and Northern Ireland have made huge strides up the FIFA world rankings.. That will keeps Stan’s vociferous media critics pegged back for a game or two… But you get the impression Sanchez, having hauled his team of ‘also rans’ to the top of their group ahead of teams like Sweden, Denmark and Spain, will keep his eye on the difficult back end of the qualifiers… H/T JD

Stop your pathetic,self-indulgent MOPEry, Dr. Who

    “Perceived? Please”

    kensei,

    You miss the point.

Who is doing more, through the medium of football, to build bridges across the divide – the Linfield and Drogheda fans highlighted earlier, the Northern Ireland and Republic Of Ireland fans in the link below, or the hate filled, anti Northern Ireland brigade who sprew their bigoted bile on here – laughingly in the name of “unity”?

    http://ourweecountry.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=11113&hl=Dalymount

Imagine – those nasty bigots on the OWC site, enjoying the craic with, and the company of, some real ROI fans (the kind who spend their money to follow their team all over the world) in Dublin.

Shocking altogether – but somewhat “unifying” none the less!

I have been threatened on this site for my Jewish background, so the last thing I need is for you is to lump me in with the anti NI trolls.

    Dr Who,
You should know by now that we’re singing from the same hymn book, although perhaps not exactly the same page….

If you’ve provided links for the incidents in question, I haven’t seen them, much of the stuff you posted seems to be of personal experiences(which I personally don’t doubt happened) rather than hard verifiable facts.

Our enemies, of which there are an abundance on this board, deal generally in ridiculous smear tactics based on the “My best mate’s brother-in- law swears he saw Hitler, wearing a Norn Iron scarf, singing the sash, riding Shergar into Windsor” variety. We can have a little bit of fun with this bunch, but, in general, they can safely be ignored, pitied even.

IMHO, people like George, Billy Pilgrim, even Kensei (on occasions;)) are prepared to debate with us in a rational, grown-up fashion-our arguments against these individuals, however need to be backed up with facts and links like the ones I provided George earlier.
Apologies if you have already done so and for the hectoring tone of this post.

Now, bit of professional advice, what do you suggest for this hayfever I’m suffering from at the minute?

I would like to see the Setanta Cup expand and improve – but I just can’t see how that is going to happen practically.

    That would be my thinking.

I really can’t see how an All-Ireland league would make the difference to club soccer on the island without a massive cash investment from either the state or the private sector. And I can’t see what a private sector investor would get out of such a sponsorship to justify such an outlay.

The state (in NI anyway) seems to have tied up its sports spending budget for the next century or so, if rumours are to be believed, so I can’t se it being capable of helping out football at a grassroots level either.

‘Now, bit of professional advice, what do you suggest for this hayfever I’m suffering from at the minute’

BP, Why are you suggesting that the Dr. has a big nose?

  • BP1078

big kneb(I hope I got the spelling right there),

    What a curious comment.

I’m asking the Doc and anyone else out there, for a hayfever remedy…if they want to tell me all about their facial features like you’ve just done.. great, but it’s not essential.

It’s nice, but I think it’s more a reflection of the changes in the NI setup, just as some of the anger expressed here is a symptom of the current situation as much as anything else. Certainly, I doubt this would be happening after a repeat of the 1994 game. There is also a bit more distance in Dublin and no one is telling them that they should be supporting the NI and it represents them. The point I was making is that the division is very real, especially in the North and not “perceived”

And the NI fans here are certainly capable of tossing out as good as they get.

  • lala

“Wow – that’s even higher than the % that support a united Ireland (about 60%)”

40% of “nationalists” aren’t…nationalist/support a united ireland?? I’ll take it you meant Roman Catholics, but if 60% only support a united ireland, i dont know where the rest are hiding.

I used to provide my real email address on this site, but unfortunately had to remove it due to certain people sending me nasty e-mails, threatening violence.

One poster recognised my identidy and even named where my parents live.

Accusing me of self indulgent MOPEry is both bollox and very lazy of you. I did send Mick a sample of the mail I was sent. One other poster asked me to go back to my “warsaw ghetto and prepare for the camps”. Amazingly this was not removed.

Nexium as well as being a drug that reduces acidity, also relieves symptoms of hayfever according to users. Smokers also swear this drug has helped beat the habit. A doctor is not allowed to prescribe it for these things, so tell him you have pollups on your osophegus, which are causing chronic indigestion symptoms.

Pop one 20mg tablet daily before breakfast.

    Now whose next.

“You’ve obviously never been beat up coming out of Windsor park because of your religion.”

Have you? I bet anyone beaten up – which obviously happens- was victimised because of the team they supported, as opposed to their church attendance.

And that happens the world over- I got hospitalised in Glasgow many years ago because some Cellick fans heard my accent in a bar- I wasn’t even there for a game, but I was fair game as a perceived “Hun”?

Am I paranoid about celtic supporters- would I never go to Celtic park? No and No.
Nonsense is what underlies this MOPEry. (BTW I can recommend the nurses in the Western Infirmary Glasgow- stunnas!! Perhaps that helped me remain normal)

  • scary_eire

Here’s a question for everybody – if there is a UI do you think the two teams will automatically merge together?

  • BP1078

    scary eire
“No” is the short answer to your question.

And the next time anyone whitters on about why can’t we have a “United” Ireland football team, I’m going to present this thread as Exhibit A

  • “I can recommend the nurses in the Western Infirmary Glasgow- stunnas!! Perhaps that helped me remain normal)”

    Yeah Darth,

I went on a stag weekend to Glasgow last September and managed to touch for a nurse who worked up in the Infirmary. She was an absolute cracker! Other than Glasgow, I reckon the Manchester girls takes some beating. if you are ever there, check out a bar called Loaf. Something else….!

Apologies to everyone as I’ve just realised this has absolutely nothing to do with the thread…

Had to laugh at the Sunday Life’s sensational coup over the Fix surrounding the latest FIFA World Rankings. Intrepid reporter, Paul Ferguson (I know, who?) states that a number of Are We A Country? (AWAC) fans had contacted the Sunday Life ‘outraged’ that the Republic had the cheek to be higher in the rankings than the Ulstermen (6 county version.)

‘How could this happen when our boys had secured 2 back-to-back wins?’ wondered the bemused Paul, who is clearly not MENSA material.
After an emergency meeting of FIFA’s Executive, the embarrassing truth was revealed. The Republic had also had the temerity to win their last 2 games thus garnering significantly more points than Norn Iron due to the higher rating of their opposition over the 2 games.
Cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth by the AWAC Loyal and Ace Hack, Fergie….

In the period since NI drew away to Denmark, the ROI have played competitively four times to our twice.

Roi have beaten San Marino twice,(extremely fortunate with it) and back to back home wins against Wales and Slovakia. Northern Ireland having played and won two games competitively, including the victory over top ten side Sweeden have amassed a slightly smaller total on account of playing fewer games.

Strange the “intelligent” Austin rates Wales and Slovakia above Sweeden. Or is he simply showing exactly how little he knows about football.

In terms of actually qualifying for a tournament, Northern Ireland has done fuck all squared for 21 years.

1986, I believe was the final leg of your Farewell Tour on the World Stage -Chris De Burgh was No. 1, Prince Andrew married Fergie(not the Sunday Life one-although to be fair to the royal one, she loved a lost cause too..) and that other Fergie was appointed manager of Man Utd.

Since then, three World Cup Finals and a Euro Final for the actual Irish Football Team.

My God, I didn’t realise until now how all those years in the wilderness had hurt you..

“Can you provide evidence where another international team’s supporters’ website, which is involved in an anti-racism campaign, refers to its closest neighbour’s supporters as ‘Scum’?”

Les Bleus to the Italians last summer, pig fuckers was the actual term I heard bandied about. And I’m sure the pi… italians had something to say back, but it makes no difference, pack of cheating cunts that they are.
And who could forget 1996, England harking back to WWII and an assortment of trash in the newspapers about sticking it to Fritz, and before that 1988, Dutchies erecting a huge banner across one of the main autobahns, reminding der inkoming germans that “They are now entering the land of der european miesters”.
Yep, no anna-moss-city there at all.

Of course, that’s not racist or sectarian – it’s only a bit of craic.

Fascinating to see several former Celtic “greats” endorse the Union as signatories to a declaration in today’s Daily Record Anthony.

I’m hoping FIFA don’t see it, or it’ll strengthen the case for an All UK team.
