Shoukri back in jail

On Saturday the Irish News reported [subs req] that Ihab Shoukri had been “taken under the wing of the leadership of the breakaway South east Antrim UDA” – who would probably not be counted among that ‘good’ UDA grouping which will benefit from the government’s recent allocation of public funds – after returning to Northern Ireland following a relaxation of his bail conditions. Today it emerged that, by that stage, he had already been arrested and has now been charged with handling stolen goods. A High Court application to revoke bail on the earlier charges is reportedly expected.

No-one is interested in the Shoukris or their mate McClean. There are a lot of good people in Westland’s K Coy. of the North Belfast UDA and they give them a bad name. The majority of the residents of the estate are glad these criminals have been stood down and don’t want to hear continual media reports about them which only serve to increase their notoriety and infamy, which believe me, these people love, as it increases their profile.

The aforementioned people have no place in a free, civilised liberal democracy, let alone an organisation that is trying to rid itself of gangsterism and a Mafia-image that has unfortunately been bestowed on it by cynical media and press outlets and so-called “loyalist” sources that have their own agenda and hold a grudge against the Association.

I would take reports that S.E.A. are, if you like, “protecting” Ihab Shoukri, with a pinch of salt. There is not a split within the UDA but it is true there are diagreements between the S.E.A. Brigade and North Antrim-Londonderry/four Belfast Brigades as to the path the Association should take to move away from paramilitarism and towards helping the communities they represent through projects, for example, enabling adults of working-age to enjoy better education and training so they are better equipped for long-term employment.

There is a lot of good work being done within the Association, including within South-East Antrim’s jurisdiction, and it’s not going to be over-shadowed or de-valued by selfish Mafiosi only intent on lining their own pockets at the expense of the communities they oppress…

CL: “No-one is interested in the Shoukris or their mate McClean. There are a lot of good people in Westland’s K Coy. of the North Belfast UDA and they give them a bad name. ”

A neat trick, that, all things considered…

CL: “The aforementioned people have no place in a free, civilised liberal democracy, let alone an organisation that is trying to rid itself of gangsterism and a Mafia-image that has unfortunately been bestowed on it by cynical media and press outlets and so-called “loyalist” sources that have their own agenda and hold a grudge against the Association. ”

Gee, throw them in with the hoods within the Association, and you’ve got a hell of a mess to clean up.

CL: “I would take reports that S.E.A. are, if you like, “protecting” Ihab Shoukri, with a pinch of salt. A note of farce, not irony — the UDA would like public monies to repair the neighborhoods their protection rackets and drug-dealing destroyed.

The easiest short-term improvement would be to end the protection rackets and drug-dealing, turn in the guns and fade away… but that would deprive the “big men” the opportunity to throw their weight about in the future, particularly given the lack of a credible political wing.

CL: “There is a lot of good work being done within the Association, including within South-East Antrim’s jurisdiction, and it’s not going to be over-shadowed or de-valued by selfish Mafiosi only intent on lining their own pockets at the expense of the communities they oppress… ”

The Shoukri brothers biggest sins were getting greedy and getting caught, in that order.

As for Shoukri himself, I guess you can take the boy out of the ‘hood, but you can’t take the hood out of the boy.

CL, I’ve read it three times now, and I still can’t keep a straight face!

Can we nominate CL’s post for the award of funniest Slugger contribution ever?

    Man, I nearly died laughing.

Suggestions for UDA contributions to further education – Jaysus, that was priceless.

Does the good UDA operate in Lisburn or not? I’m assuming that’s the territory of South East Antrim UDA. I just want to know before I buy some E’s for the weekend – want to make sure I support the good UDA in such matters. Maybe we should make drugs ‘Fair Trade’ like bananas – then we can choose which UDA (good or bad) to get them from.
