Bob “is toast!”…

ANTI-Agreement unionist Bob McCartney is – according to sources – “toast”, with the ballots pouring out of the boxes showing apparently little for his efforts.

  • mitch345

good, he’s a useless, arrogant prick

  • blackertthegreat

Leave Bob alone, god loves a trier.

  • Belfast Gonzo

I should have pointed out that this is in North Down. But since that’s his home turf, I wouldn’t be terribly optimistic about the other five constituencies he’s standing in.

  • mitch345

that’s the problem, bob thinks he is god!

  • Armaghlite

It couldn’t happen to a nicer rejectionist.

  • I Wonder

I don’t like to appear uncharitable, but f*ck him.

It’s a “Portillo moment” if it happens.

  • Nestor Makhno

    in the immortal words:

‘The public have spoken…. the b@st@rds!”

  • Crusty Burke

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Ego has landed (with a thump)…

  • HermionieG

DUP going for the ethnic vote?

While i know that there are a number of text services on offer for the election, so far the DUP’s declaration of their first count successes is the most interesting. It reads “Peter Robinson, East Belfast , Nigel Dodd North Belfast and Jimmy Spratt , south Belfast all top the poles and are elected on the first count.”

  • Animus

That’s something to cheer me up on a miserable day!

  • Dread Cthulhu

    Now, now…

The beauty of a democracy is that it encourages the various malcontents and cranks to come to the fore, present their ideas for judgement by their fellow subjects and let the votes fall where they may.

In the end, only a chosend few malcontents go on the pay-roll (and who knows, we might get some work out of them!), the rest can either console themselves with a good effort or deride the voters as not worthy of the candidates vision, thus defusing the other cranks.

  • Dessertspoon

It’s so pleasing to see that the good folks of Norn Iron have learnt their lesson and have realised that it’s not a good idea to vote for the extreme parties………….oh no wait they haven’t. So depressed!!!!!!! 🙁

  • Keith M

What are the sources here? I’ve seen nothing from North Down yet.

  • I Wonder

Keith, you’relooking straight into that Egyptian river, I think 😉

  • oh Keith M ,
wishful thinking on your part as you grasp for straws on behalf of Bob (I’m a barrister, you know) McCartney.

… but will he stay out of the media if he loses… hopefully.

  • Keith M

Two replies and still no sources. Interesting!

  • esmereldavillalobos

The “Popular Front of Judaea” comes to mind – “…he’s over there…”

  • esmereldavillalobos

1st preference vote halved in North Down to 1,806. Fat lady warms up.

  • Crusty Burke

The link to the North Down result on the BBC website is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2007/nielection/html/201.stm

There’s the proof that old Cream Cake’s message of hopelessness somehow hasn’t been explained clearly enough to the North Down electorate!!

  • Slartibuckfast

    Hilarious stuff about Bob.

  • smoking

Bob to sue North Down electorate for publicly ridiculing him by NOT voting for him.

Writs to follow against the electorate in five other constituencies…

    More (laughter) soon…

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • what do Garrett’s political career, Fine Gael as a political force to be reckoned with and Bob (I’m a barrister, you know) McCartney have in common…?

other than being spent, washed out, ineffective west brits they’re all Keith’s picks in the game of “pundit who knows the voter best”.

How are you getting along with the “Residents Against Croke Park for games other than Cricket and Lawn Bowls” campaign? Where you entitled to a freebie ticket for the French and Eng games? … I can guess what you were singing at the top of your voice.

You Reform Movement members really got your finger on the pulse of Irel and know how to vote manage. Don’t worry the Irish Thames will put a good spin on it for you… maybe an article by CCOB will cheer you up.

  • Crusty Burke

Cream Cakes takes 2% of first preferences in Lagan Valley…

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2007/nielection/html/353.stm

So the good electorate of Lagan Valley didn’t listen clearly to Cream Cakes either???

    LOL

  • A voter

Ye Bob!! Remember telling us poor people who live in housing estates that we live in Ghetto’s.

Ye Bob!! Remember your side’s kicks wife, Mrs Granny beater who beat up pensioners in the home in North Down. What was the name now Mr & Mrs Sheridan?

Ye Bob!! We can’t all live in CULTRAW “nor do most of us want to “

Get on your bike Mr snob and disappear.
Results at the ballot box tells you we don’t want you.

  • Valenciano

    “Cream Cake?”

Dunno about that but maybe he can use his numerous wooden spoons to eat some humble pie?

  • Bole

Bye bye Bob. It wasnt nice knowing you.

  • Cook

Was it not the Judaean Popular Front?

  • sean1

If you think Bob is bad look at some of his recruits. You have the grewsome twosome ‘Cubitt brothers’ East Londonderry and Ballymena. Two buck idiots if you ever saw two together. Reminds me of that film ….deliverance, hill billies that is.

  • Valenciano

On the basis of the North Down result though, his successor as MP may also be toast. However she does at least have substantial tactical votes to mine.

Sinn Fein were only 328 votes behind the SDLP in South Down with 434 votes cast for ex-shinner Martin Cunningham which would have narrowed it further.

  • Comrade Stalin

Bob’s total and utter defeat, and the defeat of irregular rejectionist unionism, is one of the highlights of this election. I thought they might get a few votes, but it seems instead that people are weathering the course and putting their trust in Paisley.

Where is David Vance when you need him ?

  • pith

He was never the Carson he thought he was.

  • another_pleb

He’ll be back. And then he’ll show us all how stupid we all were for not voting for him. And we’ll all be made to line up and apologise to him individually.

  • Truth and Justice

Thee is only one person that can take Hermon on and win its up to the DUP leadership to wake upand realize!

  • BonarLaw

    Truth and Justice

    and who might that be?

Judging from your e-mail I have a sneaking suspicion I know who you have in mind!

  • páid

Well I liked him if no-one else did.

Intelligent, witty and in all the years I never heard him hint at a biggoted comment.

Didn’t agree with him but compare him to Sammy “I knew we’d win ‘cos Celtic got beat last night” Wilson.

These new unionists just don’t have any class.

  • Well Now,

What a gloat-fest for the hard of thinking.

If you want my thoughts, you should read “The Frankie Goes to Holywood” election on A Tangled Web.

As Slugger’s more perceptive readers will know, I split with him years ago and relations have been, shall we say, chilled? But I will say this. He is a principled and decent man, who I am proud to have known. His political views and mine are quite apart in most areas, but his contempt for terrorists in power echoes my own.

So, enjoy your little dance on Bob’s political fall today, but I can assure you peace processors all that I haven’t gone away.

    In peace – lol!

  • David who?

  • Token Dissent

I disagree with Bob’s position and I do find his ego hard to stand…but when all is said and done the Assembly will be weaker without him.

As has been commented he is not a bigot, and he attempted – especially during the dark days of the 1980s – to offer a progressive option for unionism.

Unlike the mayority of the politicans successful today he never had any alliance with paramilitary groups. He also took a brave stand against homophobia, as well as other campaigns on rates etc.

It is a genuine shame that he ended up being a negative force in the political process.

  • Smilin’ what?

  • Crataegus

    Token Dissent

Well said. On one hand I get a sense of satisfaction at his demise in a childish way but on the other am sad that someone who once showed promise should end this way.

  • Token Dissent / Crataegus,

Fair comments that avoid the unpleasantness of previous ones. Bob was often his own worst enemy, but I find the MSM presentation of his defeat sickening.
