Political old guard slip out of the game…

Martina Purdey says goodbye to an old guard that is quietly slipping out of politics… Interestingly the weightiest names are in the UUP… Though it is not absolutely clear who is going to take the places of Lords Trimble and Taylor…

These men served us well here in Belfast but also represented our wee country and made many friends at Westminster.

Taylor yes, but Trimble was and is famously unclubable.

  • Also, does their admirer know that there’s more to Norn Iron then Belfawst?

  • John East Belfast

To you cultchies there is Belfaaaaast

Pity Taylor never became UUP leader :(. He just might have kept the UUP ahead of the DUP by being able to keep the SDLP on board. Poor Trimble should have stayed out of politics . The poor sod was too honest a man for that game .

  • Dr Strangelove

It looks like Taylor will have the chance to spend more time with his fugitive friends in Northen Cyprus

  • Glen Taisie

Philip McGuigan “slips quietly out the door” certainly thats how the leadership would want us to think.

    Someone will tell us surely?????

Could we have a list of the friends Taylor made at Westminster? Could we have another of the friends he made at the European Parliament?

    M. Le Penn

Is that the sort of friend any “wee country” would want?

Love them or loath them Taylor and Trimble were both vote-getters (comparitively speaking) for the UUP in their respective constituencies, the same goes for Nesbitt to a lesser degree. The UUP will suffer in these areas without them.
