Fertiliser: for growing, not blowing…

WHAT do farming and terrorism have in common? Fertiliser, of course! And now farmers are being warned to lock up their ammonium nitrate supplies, in case Islamic extremists try to emulate the techniques Irish republicans used in the Docklands in 1996, Omagh in 1998 or mainland Britain in 2001. Maybe I’m being cynical beyond the call of duty here but to my mind this is just another tweak on the Public Fear crank.

To draw a crass and perhaps unpleasant analogy here, the bombing tactics of the two groups aren’t similar. The IRA favoured “Mercedes” bombs. Big, Powerful and Crude. The Islamists favour a more “Mini Cooper” approach. Small, not as powerful, but precise.

The IRA’s approach lent itself to the old “Fertilizer mix”, because it was cheap, readily available and the bulk of the explosive wasn’t a problem when it was packed into a transit van or such. The islamist types favour smaller, more powerful explosives like TATP (Peroxyacetone, ol’ “Mother of Satan”) because they are more suited to them, operationally speaking.

For the he Muslim terrorist’s preferred tactic of suicide bombings, the more sophisticated explosives are a necessity, as the person transporting the explosive is required to *WEAR* it.

Likewise, there is very little “precise” about “strangers nearby”, regardless of how sophisticated, clumsy, large or small your bomb is.

Kind of what I was saying, but more succinct.
