Kelly lambasts SDLP for ‘taking crumbs’

Prominent SDLP supporter and Irish News columnist, Tom Kelly, has launched a stinging attack on the party for agreeing to participate in the Stormont chamber discussions/debates. He has a go at the “less politically aware” party members who seem “anxious to take whatever crumbs fall from the table,” dismissing the entire ‘charade’ as “a feudal if not imperial form of governance.”

    good article.

I would rather have the DUP in government that the humiliating spectacle of NI politicians whining and begging at the feet of imported overlords.

  • Keith

“On the bright side; everyone will be in the same building at the same time”

a reasonable step forward in my opinion.

I would rather they carried on “Stormont: Safe Mode” for a while instead of going back into it all full force.

Bloody Daily Ireland making up another anti-SDLP story, the Sinn Fein rag. No other paper would carry stories claiming to be the opinions of former prominent SDLP supporters now critical of the leadership within the party.

Err, this article was carried by the Irish News, written by a former SDLP stalwart and current Irish News columnist…..

    Wake up at the back!!!

  • The Beach Tree

Em, INR, it IS an Irish News story…

    Nothin’ to do with DI.

  • The Beach Tree

    Chris

    Sorry, snap.

  • IrishNewReader

    CD, BT,

Hear that sound? Thats something that went way over your head.

  • Shore Road Resident

I suspect that the above post was an attempt at sarcasm by a Daily Ireland hack.

  • Chris Donnelly

I need to lie down after all that….

I thought that too, turns out it was Tom Kelly in the Irish News. Bloody Morganite.

  • CS Parnell

Crumbs off the table as opposed to medals off the Queen? Tom Kelly should go ride himself.

  • stan

Even the pro-union camp within the sdlp are now critical of the leadership.

  • CS Parnell

Stan, Tom Kelly is not “within the sdlp”

  • elfinto

Ironic, given that Kelly recently accepted an imperialist gong. It seems the Stoops are in meltdown.

  • stan

“Stan, Tom Kelly is not “within the sdlp””

    cs

Thats their problem, very few ARE “within the sdlp”

24 members in the whole West Belfast constituency etc…

  • DK

Odd, the impression I got was that the SDLP were close to boycotting the assembly while SF, with all their deals with HMG & DUP were a dead cert to go in.

Love the phrase “Stormont: Safe Mode” – genius!

Anyway, after such a long time off, they need the practice (or house training).

  • Nevin

    DK,

Before Hain started Stormont: Safe Mode did he switch off System Restore and check for the presence of that notorious MLA, Mal Ware?

  • J Kelly

this again just proves that the sdlp will accept anything that is thrown at them, no ability to take a reasoned position and stick with it.

    Stronger than what,

  • tom kelly

Ed. Just a point of information to your contributors -I did not write the column as a former SDLP member – it was my regular weekly column in the Irish News where I have been writing for five years. Nor was this week’s column used as an attack on the SDLP. Its main thread is about being honest about what type of assembly we have -as opposed to the Assembly – we are supposed to have. T

    Tom

The SDLP’s official position has always been that accepting awards from the British royal famiy endorse the British state and the royal family.

Did you leave the stoops because some within the grassroots (whats left, that is) were unhappy at your decision or are you like most elected members of the sdlp who use the party as a vehicle to promote their own personal self interest and as a means for financial gain via the media etc..?

No surprise that you told only one party colleague beforehand, Eddie McGrady, who like yourself, is as interested in Irish unity as the ‘good Doctor’ himself.

Throw in McDonnell’s reaction to your ‘award’
“I am delighted for Tom and wish him well”.

If the three of you keep stooping you might even get another chance to ‘stoop’ when getting your knighthood.

“I’m really happy. We’re going to celebrate it tonight.

  • Mick Fealty

Thanks for that Tom. Sometimes I get the impression that too many of our readers stop at the blog and don’t actually bother to follow the links! Remember where the ball is lads, and try to make some attempt to play it!! 😉
