Premature judgement ignores advances

Vincent Browne is one of the few mainstream voices in Irish journalism that is arguing that premature judgement of Sinn Fein is destructive of the democratic process. On the accusations that the party slid under the form of words required by the two governments:

“It is true that the IRA baulked at the form of words proposed by the two governments on the issue of criminality. There was understandable reason for that: the IRA has always claimed that it does not engage in criminality.

“It says it is about a political struggle which, of course, involves methods that, under the present legal system, are illegal. But it rejects the characterisation of criminality, which was the issue at the core of the 1980 hunger strikes.

It is now clear that the IRA would have negotiated on a formula of words that would have taken care of the issue that was of concern to the governments and the other parties”.

At the heart of this is that people bent over backwards to accomodate them with fudged wording and were betrayed. “Give us some slack so that we can sell it to the lads” and “Say it slightly differently but we’ll go with what you want ” has time and time again provided loopholes. That’s why the details have to be nailed down.
I might not like it, but I can see their justification for claiming that their “military” actions weren’t (commercially )criminal in the days of the Hunger Strikes. But equating their move to “commercial” criminality – extortion , drug dealing -directly or indirectly by titheing – free-lance robbery (such as seen at Adare) means that SF is negotiating for their entry into government while DELIBERATELY facilitating the IRA changing into a mirror image of Loyalism.i.e from an organisation with primarily political objectives into a commercially criminal organisation that tries to cover itself with a shabby cloak of political ‘respectability’.

Interestingly your analysis is not recognised by the majority of nationalists.

You have a mandate to speak for the majority of nationalists now Pat ? Is that in 6 or 32 Irish Counties ? 😉
