As the NIO publish the Operation of the Terrorism Act 2000 Statistics for 2003, PDF (I had to repair the link from the NIO press section to get the report), something I’ve visited previously, I noted the continuing high use of British Armed forces when one might think with base closures and a process of demilitarisation such operations would be greatly reduced.
Yet again the British army searched substantially more premises than the PSNI. 79 under Section 83 of legislation as opposed to 24 under Section 82. The Army also increased the number of times they stopped and searched individuals to 10,921 almost tenfold the PSNI’s 1,388, under section 89 of legislation. Section 89 powers are designed to be used when investigating recent explosions or life endangering incidents were nearly 11,000 detentions for search purposes warranted?
