Sinn Féin’s Alex Maskey is demanding that the DUP ‘must clarify’ position on their response to the comments by his party’s president, Gerry Adams, on the possibility that the IRA might be persuaded to be removed from the equation in the ‘right’ context of “an ongoing process of sustainable change”.
While the BBC, optimistically, claims that there was a “clear signal” in what Adams had to say, other commentators (including David McKittrick, The Independent Ireland Correspondent – RealOne player required)
have pointed out the ambiguities in the original comments and regard it as part of a process of the two parties “positioning themselves” prior to the September talks. In which case, would Alex Maskey not be better to seek clarification closer to home first? Or is it a case of Sinn Féin being stung by the generally luke-warm reaction?
