Nostalgia

How many reading Slugger remember the steam train? The smoke, the smuts, the smell of the coal. One of my earliest memories of Lurgan is the excitement of being on the rickety bridge that was between Victoria Street and Brownlow Terrace, home of the Model School, while a steam train passed underneath.

Steam trains are rare beasts these days in Ireland – and if the Belfast to Derry line is axed it seems they will become rarer still! The Belfast Telegraph reports concerns that this could be the last season for the Portrush Flyer!

Seats are still available for this year’s excursions. This could be the last chance for those of you who have never experienced the magic of steam travel in Northern Ireland and with the weather promising to be good, a wonderful day out for children.

Link fixed, Thank you Mark McGregor, this isn’t as easy as I thought!

Hopefully, it’s right now ! Thanks again Mark.

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported. Help us keep Slugger independent by becoming a friend of Slugger. While we run a tight ship and no one gets paid to write, we need money to help us cover our costs.
