Best Trump antidote: Learn to play well with others, prioritise conviviality and learning

Mick Fealty on January 4, 2018, 12:03 pm | Readers 524

In the last year I’ve been doing some part time digital comms work, in part as a preparation for a more public project I’ve been working on with my Swedish based colleague, John Kellden. Right from the start of Slugger back in 2002 I’ve kept a watching brief on how digital innovation is changing how we relate to each other. As blogging and micro blogging (Twitter/FB) has gone mainstream so have the worst (as well as some of the better) …

In journalism “claims towards neutrality and impartiality and objectivity are bogus.”

Mick Fealty on March 10, 2014, 10:30 am | Readers 151

I’ve only met Roy Greenslade once. Ironically it was in the British embassy in Paris for a round table (PDF) on the future of UK and French journalism. He’s every bit as intelligent and convivial as he comes across in his blog. This week he was in the news, rather than just commenting on it when it was learned that he stood bail for John Downey. Interestingly he shares his thoughts on politics and journalism with the Irish Post: “I …

That #Selfie: Do our elite really ‘get’ the new grammar of digital democracy?

Mick Fealty on December 11, 2013, 1:43 pm | Readers 63

So what do you make of that ‘selfie’ from the Mandela Memorial? Personally the nearest I’ve been to an African funeral/memorial service was just ordinary a Mass at the windowless Catholic Cathedral in Abuja. I’d never quite witnessed anything like the joy, the singing the dancing and the time taken anywhere else I’ve attended Mass (from Horsens in Denmark to Los Angeles). What in the old days at least used to take some Irish priests just 35 minutes on a …

Friday Thread: The importance of creativity, fun and engagement in digital marketing

Sophie O'Neill on March 22, 2013, 2:07 pm | Readers 90

Our video, featuring Highways Manager Jon Fraser, was released last week. It has been widely well received, and cost was relatively little at £800, provided by our contractor rather than from public funds. We made sure we spent it working with local filmmaker. It took just a day and a half to make. Given the video’s ongoing success with getting its message across, with over 11,000 views and rising, we felt it was time and money well spent. There’s no …

#Oirsocm: TD’s and Senators must first get past the blind panic induced by the word ‘Internet’…

Mick Fealty on March 6, 2013, 9:51 pm | Readers 18

The Irish Twitterati are killing themselves with laughter after an indifferent to extremely poor performance by a Joint Committee of the Oireachtas tasked with looking at social media this morning. But in fact, unlike Stormont’s more self indulgent performance (who have no powers in this regard), the lack of understanding amongst TDs and Senators (who do) is a matter for real concern. There were a few points of common sense. Anne Phelan, a Labour TD from Kilkenny (and sadly probably one …
