The End of Morality – Part 2…

A while ago I wrote a piece entitled “The End of Morality” in which I drew attention to a number of issues where morality had gone AWOL. Well where are we now? Let’s start with the UK.

British politics has been in an unhealthy state for some time now.I believe that the rot set in with David Cameron. Brexit and austerity. Since then the UK has been on an inexorable slide politically and economically. There has been a succession of third rate Prime Ministers culminating in the wretched Kier Starmer whose own incompetence brought forth his early demise. The UK has shamefully and slavishly followed America’s foreign policy into complicity in the wretched destruction of Gaza and its people and into the catastrophic war with Iran. Incredibly Starmer backed Israel’s right to cut off water, power and food to Gaza. Burnham is unable to call genocide for what it is.

In Britain civil liberties have been trashed, octogenarians have been dragged off the street for protesting genocide. Activists have been remanded for excessive periods of time awaiting trial. Others have been sentenced as terrorists for acts of ordinary criminal damage. Political activists and journalists have been harassed and arrested simply for speaking out. Former MP George Galloway lives abroad, fearful of what might happen if he returns to the UK. Female NHS doctor, Rahmeh Aladwan, who has an unblemished medical career has been suspended by the GMC (after being cleared at a previous hearing) for her political views as a result of a campaign by pressure group UK Lawyers for Israel with help from the British press. The most recent harassment of this individual whose only crime had been her advocacy of Palestine is the closure of her account by Lloyds Bank. This is known as debanking and has also happened to UN Special Rapporteur for the Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese. How can this be possible in a democracy?

At the same time the BBC continues in its role as the Government’s mouthpiece. The extent of the BBC’s manipulation of news relating to Israel’s actions in Gaza is breathtaking. Its framing of news is biased in favour of Israel. Academic studies have backed this up (Centre for Media Monitoring). Thus Palestinians “die” whereas Israelis are “murdered.” It talks about the “war” where one side is a nuclear power with one of the world’s most powerful armed forces and the other has neither army, air force or navy. It was never a war. It is a genocide. And for those who don’t like that description let’s just call it wanton slaughter on a massive scale.

On the other side of the Atlantic morality has long ceased to exist. The USA bestrides the globe as a colossal bully. But then it always has. Dispossession of native Indian lands, accumulation of wealth through slavery and subsequent discrimination of black Americans. Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Never-ending wars: Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran. It seems that only now has the mist cleared from our eyes and we can see what was always in front of us. Yet the UK panders to successive American presidents in order, in order to protect the fantasy that is the “Special Relationship.”

So in 2026 where are we? Activist and former British diplomat Craig Murray says he has lost faith in both Western social democracy and in the institutions of international law. The UN is powerless. The ICC is undermined, its judges subject to US sanctions and debanking.

Which leads us to the Gaza conflict.

“ A number of deeply shocking things have happened this past three years, not as extraneous events, but as conscious acts of western governments acting in unison. The Genocide in Gaza has been the most obvious.”

(Craig Murray.org. Losing my Religion. September 29, 2026)

Conservative estimates of the casualties of this conflict are as follows:

  •  75,000 dead in Gaza and 1,000 in the West Bank.
  •  25,000 children dead.
  •  10,000 dead under the rubble.
  •  Tens of thousands of secondary deaths due to lack of access to healthcare.
  •  150,000 injured, many horribly.
  •  1,000 killed since the ceasefire was announced.
  • Gaza has been reduced to rubble.
  • 3,200 Israeli dead including October 7 attacks.

The West stay silent. Yet this is a Western backed,Western funded, Western protected genocide. Yet is it Genocide? According to Wikipedia: “The genocide has been recognized, in either  legal or scholarly sense, by a United Nation special committee and commission of inquiry, the International Association of Genocide Scolars, state governments and others.”

On an individual level, what can we do about Gaza? Very little unfortunately. It grieves me when I read of Palestinians saying “We have been abandoned, no one cares about us.” So we must march, we must protest, we must write about it and engage in all available media – newspapers, radio, television and social. Anything that sends out a message that we care.

One day everyone will have been against this.
