SDLP: No to a head to head but would consider a more inclusive debate

This whole issue started two weeks ago when the Sinn Fein candidate for South Belfast, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir asked for a debate with the sitting MP Alasdair McDonnell.

It is my understanding that the DUP Candidate, Jonathan Bell is also game for a debate.

However the key question is what about the sitting MP? Speaking to Slugger an SDLP spokesperson tonight said;

The SDLP has received no formal invitation to participate in any debate in South Belfast. While we would consider any opportunity to discuss the issues important to people, any potential debate must be inclusive and representative of the range of political views in the area.

That is a no to a head to head with his Sinn Fein opponent  but there is a possibility of a debate with other parties included like the DUP, UUP and Alliance.

    Why am I not that surprised…?…suppose I’ll wait for my usual 5 year knock on the door again for my vote from Al’s team…..with the same bluster and wind.

    Might be a light issue.

    Nah….don’t want any 100w bulbs…they’re banned anyway.

    Wee Conal could have loaned him some cool shades, if he hadn’t panicked and got rid of ( the threat) him.

    BBCNI/UTV/Local Newspapers in each area should organise a series of debates in each constituency where the public and the challengers get an opportunity to discuss/debate the issues with the sitting MP. If not, why not?

    The flying Dr is above such things… you really do not want to make him angry.

    Wow. Talk about massive disengagement from politics. I guess with our tendency to just support parties our families have supported down the years leads to this.

    Why Ó Muilleoir didn’t suggest an all party debate rather than a tribal debate for South Belfast himself surprises me. Surely Ó Muilleoir can’t be thinking the unionist or Alliance voter is a demon who doesn’t want to listen to what Sinn Féin wants to say and that Jonathan Bell iand the other candidates than him and McDonnell are demons who will say things Sinn Féin wouldn’t want the oxygen of publicity to say?

    I would have a six to eight way debate including Claire Bailey of the Greens and one or two others.

    Suppose while we’re joking about things Gerry Kelly could have loaned Martín his land rover so he could get through loyalist crowds.
