World Cup Predictions 2014 Reminder

Amid rumours that Robinson and McGuiness have been invited by Moy Park to visit the World Cup, apparently to see what a new football stadium looks like, just a reminder that there is one day left to make predictions.

After the endless dithering of recent elections and multiple winners, the ultimate “Winner Takes All” competition the football “World Cup” is almost upon us. In the same ruthless spirit let the 2014 World Cup Prediction game begin.

Below are  a series of ten questions which require ten predictions. Each, if answered correctly, will receive 10 points. The person with the most points wins the “Rules Jimmy” trophy named after Jimmy “Look Ma, Top of the World” Cagney the best two footed singer never to play in the World Cup.

For ease of reference all of the teams and the initial eight groups are listed below.  Those of you who know nothing about football  but are at home with  code cracking and conspiracy can work out the eventual winner from the  four bytes of numerical information following each team. All entries by Thursday noon 12th June please. My entry is below:

    Articles, here’s another question: how much will the poor people of Brazil get out of this? Answer: absolutely nothing! They are literally living in shitholes while they watch all these stadia being built around them, no wonder there are protests and I hope they keep them up during the world cup!

    England as group winners? oofda!

    The lads at the back are shaky.
    The big number 8 (Charlton is it?) will want it on his head but the other lad who delivers the crosses (Beckham I think) will be drained by the accursed heat in the deserts of Brazil.
    Here is the correct answer.
    Four group winners: Colombia Uruguay Argentina Belgium.
    Team with most goals : Belgium
    Player with most goals : Lukaku
    Team with most red cards: England
    World Cup winners: Belgium

    PREDICTIONS PLEASE

    Identify four group Winners? 40 points

    Group Winner:
    Brazil, Spain, Colombia, Uruguay, France, Argentina, Germany, Belgium

    Which team will score the most goals? 10 points
    Argentina (14)

    Which player will score the most goals? 10 points.
    Messi.

    Which team will have the most red cards (players sent off)? 10 points
    Portugal

    Which team will win the World Cup? 10 points

    Argentina

    At which stage will England exit? Group, Round of 16, Quarter Final QF, Semi Final SF, Final F. 10 points.

    England fail to qualify for next round. (Tournament effectively over by half-time of their second game.)

    Will Rooney score or get sent off first or neither? 10 points
    Neither.

  • In summary our ten forecasters between them believe that

    •Brazil and Argentina are racing certainties to top their groups, but it is difficult to call elsewhere (even England get a look in);
    •Argentina are most likely to score the most goals with Aguerro and Messi sharing the spoils;
    •A South American team is likely to get the most red cards (some casual stereotyping here given that in the two last World Cups it is Europeans who have sinned the most);
    •England even if they do not fail at the Group Stage will not make it past the Quarter Finals, the only unanimous verdict of the ten;
    •Rooney is more likely to score (60%) than get sent off (10%) but 30% believe he will have no impact on the game at all.

    And so it goes.

  • Greenflag

    Only one of the ten predictors noted the Netherlands /Holland as a group winner i.e Keano

    What a difference a day makes eh :)?

    Looks like our predictors believed the Dutch ‘press ‘ /media comments on the chances of their team ? Sometimes the meeja are missing in action – just look at Iraq today -11 years after the American/Allied invasion ?

    And yet Spain had 64% of the possession and the Dutch 36% ?

    Having the ball is no use unless you know where it’s supposed to go ?

    Come on England 🙂 If Ireland can hold the Italians to a draw then England can surely win today ?

    I’m predicting an England win in Manaus and not just because I’ve a modest stake on the outcome !

  • Prediction Leaders Board

    There were a possible 100 points.

    As of today

    Mark, Doug and IJP can still achieve 90 points;
    80 points are up for grabs between Keano10, Derrydave, Boondock, Mainland Ulsterman and Babyface Finlayson;
    70 points are available to RUAR;
    60 for Articles;
    But only 50 for USA.

    If you wish to map your predictions then the following will be helpful.

    These teams have all incurred one red card already:
    Belgium and Costa Rica who are still in the competition and can get more and
    Cameroon , Croatia, Ecuador , Greece , Honduras, Italy , Portugal and Uruguay.

    These are the remaining teams and the number of goals scored.

    Netherlands 12, Colombia 11, France 10, Germany 9, Brazil 8, Argentine 7, Belgium 6 and Costa Rica 5

    These are the top scorers still in the competition
    James Rodríguez 5, Thomas Müller 4, Lionel Messi 4, Neymar 4, Karim Benzema 3, Arjen Robben 3, Robin van Persie 3

    Looks like an open and shared low scoring contest with maybe 50 points proving a winner.

    So 50% right and 50% wrong, very binary, very black and white, very yes and no, very hit and miss, very Norn Iron.

    As the final approaches it is time to reveal the contenders for the Rules Jimmy Trophy.

    If Messi becomes the top scorer in the tourney and Argentina do not receive a red card then Mark can score 70 points max.

    If Argentina win and don’t get a red card then IJP can score 70 points max.

    If Germany win and Argentina don’t incur a red card then Doug can score 80 points, if Argentina incur a red card then Doug scores 70 and Mark and IJP score 60, if Argentina win and incur a red card then Doug scores 60 as do Mark and IJP.

    It’s as wide open as the Brazilian defence.
