See, there’s just something so right about a republican posting a link to a fee stream for the golf.

  • lamhdearg

is murdock not a republican, and now back to the golf. mark no offence but i am (in the main) switching back to “go rory go”

  • Mick Fealty

“Watch this from the young man from Holywood.” Co Down that is. The original, and the best! 😉

  • Mick Fealty

    Feck’s sake. 16 under!

  • Mark McGregor

Mick, can he both score under his age and the number of years you’ve been away from Holywood?

  • Nunoftheabove

Well, original – I’ll give you that much. Mind you, if Chuck D weighs in with a cry of “Burn Holywood, Burn” at some point we shall have to assume that McIlroy’s ball’s en route to the drink.

  • lamhdearg

    nun
fear of a black planet, did not think i would see that quoted on slugger, excellent.

  • andnowwhat

Peeing myself that it could all go wrong as I watch it on Mark’s link.

  • andnowwhat

    Lamhederg

It’s a politics site. What is more political than Fear of a Black Planet?

  • Nunoftheabove

lamhdearg, scary that that album’s 21 years old. I was always loving that “Pollywanacraka” had an Average White Band sample on it 🙂

  • JR

My bandwidth just isn’t up to that streaming link, I will just have to rely on the rest of you filling me in.

  • Nunoftheabove

Did I just hear one of the American commentators apologise to viewers who may have been offended by an intended earlier pledge of allegiance section of the coverage being left out ?

  • lamhdearg

rory was wellcomed to the terrordome at augusta but the brothers gonna work it out tonight.

  • Pete Baker

    JR

You could follow the BBC’s live-text commentary.

Or the Radio 5 live coverage, for that matter.

  • lamhdearg

jr i am going with raido 5 for sound and the dodgy pics on the link.

  • Mick Fealty

    Mark,

    Not a chance.

  • andnowwhat

    Lamhderg

Having curly hair and constantly wearing a baseball cap does not make Rory a brother.

Damn close to one though. He just needs an alarm clock on a chain around his neck

  • lamhdearg

how can he play golf with some assholes shouting every time he go’s to take a shot.

  • Nunoftheabove

He’s gonna get his and as for the rest of the field, Tioc R’s gonna shut ’em down.

  • lamhdearg

i wish someone at the course, would remove the gent that keeps shouting “get in the hole” he ( or his soundalike) was shouting it at the masters for woods.

  • lamhdearg

    nice

  • wild turkey

“Do you kind of get the feeling that the Americans are completely ‘adopting’ Rory?” asks Hubert O’Hearn. “Tiger was never particularly warm, even in his salad days, and after LeBron James’ arrogance and scandals with Ben Roethlisberger and Brett Favre in the NFL, I think their public is starved for a ‘nice’ superstar.”

    Rory for First Minister.

Strapline: “Together. We can whack it”

Wishes for all the very very best to Rory. You deserve it.

  • Rory Carr

Thanks for the link, Mark. I cannot believe that I am watching golf on television (via a p.c.) – God! I hope no one finds out, it’s more shameful than being caught in a laptop dancing club (don’t they find it a bit uncomfortable dancing on top of laptops?).

  • Dewi

No worries at all ! Fantastic!

  • lamhdearg

lets enjoy it, says van the man.

  • Mike the First

Capping an amazing performance over the four rounds…looking forward to seeing Rory lift the trophy.

  • JR

I am on the BBC live update, thanks for the tip.

  • perseus

the last guy to cane the opposition was Tiger.
this is amazing golf from Rory .. thrilling stuff !

  • Pete Baker

Interesting comment from BBC Radio 5 live commentator Jay Townsend on Rory McIlroy – “With his talent he’s an under-achiever. He’s stepped up. He’s the man.”

  • Pete Baker

The lowest winning score in US Open history?

Held, currently, by Tiger Woods at -12.

  • lamhdearg

it would be great if rory and graeme’s U.S. wins caused a influx of yanks into the local course’s.

  • Dewi

    Wonderful stuff. So composed.

  • John Ó Néill

A lot of golf people are talking him up hugely given what happened at the Masters. And rightly so. All very Hollywood…

  • Pete Baker

    -17

  • Pete Baker

    2 holes to play.

  • nightrider

    a walk in the park
Any chance we could get The Open back to Royal County Down or Portrush in the not too distant future?

  • Almost there.

How come as a MANU fan he’s wearing Man City blue, but at least it’s not pink like McDowell last year. No problem with guys wearing pink but it’s gives all of the trophy pictures a Disney hue.

  • Pete Baker

    -16

    One hole to play.

  • nightrider

Hold on, he’s a Man Utd fan??
    C’mon Day!

  • John Ó Néill

    Cruelest tweet?

McIroy will be first US Open winner with a northern accent.

    ouch

  • So much for the fabled Sky sports coverage I’m watching courtesy of Mark’ site, the BBC is far superior.

  • Good to see a design for an old fashioned open topped Westlink footbridge has gone across the pond.

  • nightrider

Beeb is a bit behind, the ‘Sky’ coverage on the net is fine.
    Beats paying for it

  • Pete Baker

Jay Townsend – “Who would’ve thought that Northern Ireland would have back to back US Open champions.”

  • nightrider

    They think it’s all over….

  • Pete Baker

-16. To win by 8 shots.

Rory McIlroy is the youngest winner of the US Open Champion for 88 years.

  • nightrider

    it is now

  • JR

Brillint result for Rory. First of many.

  • nightrider

You wait 40 years for a european winner and 2 citybuses (metro-whatever) come into Belfast at once.
We have a new icon to take over from George Best.

  • Dewi

Yes! And so cool about it!

  • Next stop the British Open!

Perfect on and off the green.

  • wild turkey

As an american who is lived in the north for over 30 years, this is a very sweet moment.

Rory sums up all that is decent, tenacious, talented and, well no pun intended, down home and down to earth about the north.

note to mark: thanks for this opportunity to post comments. it has been, in my limited experience on slugger, one of the few time there has been a total absence of whataboutery, one up manship, victimhood, sectarianism etc etc.

and for that, i am very grateful. thanks mark and big thanks to rory.

    shit! wake-up at 6:30

  • lamhdearg

thank you very much mr mcilroy.

  • Mick Fealty
  • lamhdearg

    wheres that mick?.

  • Mick Fealty

Holywood Golf Club. Home of Rory, Gerry and his grandad Jimmy! That is what *deep joy* looks like!

  • Mick Fealty

And the boy and his da: http://t.co/0NLq9vh

  • lamhdearg

this is good stuff, this young man will/is now big time.

  • Mick Fealty

Gerry McIlroy interviewed three holes before the end: “After the Masters, this is what he needed. I can’t really put it into words. But you have to stay calm till it’s all over.”

  • lamhdearg

    happy fathers day.

  • Fraoile

    Good man Rory well done.

  • al

    Well deserved Rory. Well done!

It’s a shame some people are idiots and try to bring religion into it even though Rory and the vast majority of people couldn’t give a f*ck: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rory-McIlroy-US-Open-Champion-2011/226541554040106

He’s a talented young man (the same age as me) and he has a fantastic future. Lovely to see Graeme come to watch him at the final hole and congratulate him.

Hopefully the tourist trade in golf will improve and people like Rory can help us boost the number of tourists coming to our shores in the next few years. It will be ambassadors such as Rory that revive the tourist industry not the government.

  • Just woken up to the news.

Wonderful stuff. McElroy is not just a winner. He is a model sportsman too.

    Feck’s sake. 16 under!

Just as I wished for over on the other thread, and better still he finished at minus 16. What a wonderful score. The lowest ever since the US open began 130 years ago.

dwatch (profile) 19 June 2011 at 5:49 pm
‘Come on Rory you can do it. 1,789,000 people here alone will be cheering you on. Lets see you pick up another two birdies to finish with minus 16’.

  • Jack2

    Amazing result!!!!!!!

  • Drumlins Rock

Wonder what odds I would get Darren Clarke winning it next year? 🙂

  • cynic49

If a lot of sickos were to wise up this wee place could punch above its weight at a whole lot of levels. Two US Open Champs on the trot for a place smaller than Yorkshire, pure magic!! Just hope that Rory doesn’t pick up Grahame’s mock american accent.lol

  • pippakin

Congratulations to Rory McIroy. The championship shows real character.

  • socaire

Must dig out my 6-county flag and get it ironed. And never mix sport and politics. Hasn’t he done our wee country grand. But good luck to him and f the begrudgers.

  • Drumlins Rock

Let the English Scots & Welsh claim him as a great British Champion, let those down south Claim him as Irish, let Ulster claim him too, and let Northern Ireland claim him as all of these, sure let the yanks claim him as they hosted the tournament, maybe even the European label will suit!

  • Greenflag

Is there any truth in the rumour spreading in the golfing business world that the US Open and Masters are to become Northern Ireland ‘franchises ‘

Well done to the man from Holywood . I read he spent a week in Haiti before the Open doing some charitable work . KInda gives a different perspective on this young golfing star. .
