Security situation in Foyle deteriorating

Police in Londonderry are already second-guessing emergency calls, now the PSNI commander in Foyle has told the BBC that the security situation in the district is deteriorating.

Commander Chris Yates said the threat in the district was “severe”, and had been for “a long time” .

“Severe means that an attack is highly likely and the figures bear that out,” he said.

“In 2008/09 there were 28 terrorists offences within G District. Last year there was 106. We are on an upward slope.”

He added: “Last year we had about 15 pipe bombs in the district, most of them would have been across Foyle. This year, to date, we are up to 16.

“We are on a par this year with what we saw last year, and last year was a particularly bad year.”

When it takes the police 12 hours or more to get to the scene no wonder crime is increasing. Offenders know there is a good chance of them escaping.

As always we go with the interpretation that satisfies our “worlds view” or very localised view.
    Lets see……Chicken or Egg.
The Loyalist spin (Chicken or Egg) wants to believe that theresa growing threat from dissident no marks. So naturally the spin is that we are all in freefall. The Police are so afraid to go in to deal with it.
The Republican spin (Chicken or Egg) is that crime will naturally rise if Police create a vaccuum in time or space. The criminals are emboldened.
Clearly the first priority is that lives (PSNI) are not lost…..civilian or police….and if a life is lost…..its too easy to blame the police. The people to blame are the scum who throw the pipe bombs.
But I get the feeling that a lot of people are already hoping that they get a story with a fatality to say “I told you so”.

Isolated incidents dont give a true picture of the overall police response rate, and it would be churlish to blame the cops for not wanting to rush headlong into hardline republican areas, where the likelihood of an ambush awaiting them is increased.
