An “up to date assessment” of Gerry Adams

The BBC reports that

Sinn Fein has said its leader Gerry Adams has been told that an attack against him is “a strong possibility”.

Which can’t be comfortable for the Sinn Féin president, given the pressure he evidently feels himself to be under… But, unlike any ordinary citizen, this news was apparently conveyed not by the PSNI [pdf file], but by the Northern Ireland Security Minister Paul Goggins… Not that any of those latterly mentioned are going to discuss the security of individuals… Natch.

  • Drumlins Rock

    Chickens… roost.

  • An attack on Gerry Adams is a strong possibility, and this is news???

  • Harry J

    fingers crossed

  • Mark McGregor

    Pete,

But remember this conveniently timed statement could be coming via MI5’s top man in Ireland.

Always remember to click on the links.

    In particular, the “Natch” one.

  • kelvin

Maybe this is an attempt to garner some sympathy LOL, poor Gerry is in danger, stop questioning his involvement in the IRA…

  • Pete, Paul Goggins and Gerry Adams are colleagues. Why wouldn’t Paul pick up the phone and pass on the detail of the threat? Cara McShane, SF Moyle councillor, says she had three death threat calls from a man with an English accent who claimed to be a member of the Orange Volunteers. So that rules out …

  • West Sider

    Slugger Alert:

If Adams is killed they’ll celebrate for weeks, but then….

    Nothing else to write about.

  • Pete Baker

    Sceptical not cynical, Nevin…

  • Pete, the Bel Tel has this:

The party said: “Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has been told by Paul Goggins, British minister of state, that following a recent ‘up-to-date threat assessment’ that the threat level against him is at ‘substantial – an attack is a strong possibility’.

“In recent months, Gerry Adams has received a significant number of warnings from the PSNI that his life is at risk.

“In a letter from Paul Goggins, the British minister said that following these threats he asked his officials ‘to obtain an up-to-date threat assessment on you from the Security Service’. This assessment confirmed that the threat level is substantial – an attack is a strong possibility.”

Easter is bound to be a high risk period for anyone who might be subject to a Dissident threat.

  • So Nevin, if a man with an English accent phoned you three times with death threats what would you do?
Oh yeah, phone the cops. Strange that.
    Dick.

  • Seosamh913

For someone who’s been under so many serious and imminent threats for such a very long time Mr Adams seems to have been either very lucky or superbly well protected.

  • He’s now moved beyond his usefulness, bye bye Gerry.

  • Michaelhenry

i see the brit lovers have forgot that gerry adams has been shot 5 times for being irish, now this brit lovers need to be seen has hardline now that the armed british army is of our irish streets, every brit loving dissident should be confroned this easter.

  • Panic, these ones like it up em.

Time to go Gerry. Everyone has their sell by date and Gerrys is gone over that.

Some might want to make it ” death by date ” but if you live by the sword well you can complain a bit but not too much.

Mind you would Gerry be more vunerable to the “death by squad” if he did step aside.

If an amnesty could be arranged then Gerry probably would do the correct thing (go)

Best of luck with organising that Amnesty.

Hmmm …. One does then wonder if it also originates from there. And what of the fact that MI5 are supposed to have lead responsibility for Intelligence in Northern Ireland. With a nice shiny new building in Holywood, one would surely expect them to be more than enabled to direct a cogent covert script and novel reality with IT and its InterNetworking Tools. And if they can’t, then it is the simplest thing in the world to bring in the expertise that can. It is not as if it cannot be afforded whenever there is always a blank write your own cheque for such contingencies/vital necessities, and they are always above any and all unnecessary scrutiny, as anybody who reads Intelligence and Security Committee Annual Reports can tell you …. http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/media/348175/isc-annualreport0910.pdf

Michaelhenry, don’t ever take strong dope for it fcuks up your head.

And why didn’t he die when John Gregg shot him? Because Special Branch tampered with the UDA arms dump. Why didn’t he die when the UDA tried to attach a limpet mine to his car? Brian Nelson and FRU. The Brits obviously had a reason to keep him alive.

Where have all the securocrats gone?

  • Michaelhenry

dont listen to those brit loving journalists who never got out of there beds during the conflict nineteensixtyseven, just listen to the truth.

  • Comrade Stalin

Gerry has been under threat from one source or the other pretty much continuously for the past 30 years at least, and I imagine he is updated about threats every couple of months. This is an effort to distract people from the controversy over his alleged role in the McConville killing.

  • “Where have all the securocrats gone?”

Perhaps Comical Marty has his eye on the curiacrats now. After all, he did invite Cardinal Brady to consider his position.

  • RobertEmmett

    what a load of crap.

is there an election coming up or something?

  • ranger1640

Firstly when Gerry was in a spot of bother with Liamgate, they trotted out that Gerry’s wife was ill, then his da was an alleged child abuser now when he is under pressure another fig leaf is found for him to hide behind.

The sainted Gerry is almost god like in his mustering of deflection miracles.

Who would want to be a relative, of the sainted Jona Gerry, at his next we scandal.

God (Gerry) only knows what family affliction he will use next time, maybe his son’s torn hamstring while playing gaa.

  • hodgie

while a lot of people talk about gerry in none-too-flattering terms, i have never heard any talk about people actually wanting to kill him.

the only people who talk these bogus “threats” up are Sinn Fein and the police..

  • Michaelhenry

hodgie, gerry was shot 5 times by loyalists who never shot 1 dissident, know your history.

  • Seosamh913

    Michaelhenry

You say above that he was shot for being Irish – so are you implying that in effect it was an entirely random hit by Grugg and his boys ?

  • hodgie

    michaelhenry

i know he was shot in the early 80’s and that the protective hand of british intelligence was in the background of that plot; but i was commenting more on life in the new dispensation. throughout west belfast, where i live, every bad thought can be heard about gerry adams but nobody is actually seriously talking about him in terms of: kill him! the only ones who repeatedly say he is under threat of death is sinn fein and the police. to the best of my knowledge no group has actually said they consider gerry a target.

  • Michaelhenry

the brits and the loyalists must have had a love affair with the dissidents for the last 24 years hodgie, they never even killed one dissident, some war.

    and that disappoints you?

but sure keep up with your party’s policy of passing information to the cops, you know how that information ended up in the hands of the loyalists..

sorry comrade, i don’t follow your line of thought?

  • Michaelhenry

the dissidents are supposed to be hardline hodgi, some journalists make a living by telling us so,but they have never reported the truth of whats going on.

  • hodgie

and that has what precisely to do with me? or even to the discussion?

  • Michaelhenry

you are the one who questiond me hodgie.

  • Seosamh913

    hodgie

Can I just commend you on your fairly recent RFE contribution regarding the Bobby Sands Trust and the Liam Adams story. I would intuitively consider you as someone with a valid story to tell and recommend you to others as a voice which ought to be listened to as we continue to seek to make sense of where we are and have been, someone with some regard for truth and to morality which is where you depart from a number of your former comrades.

    Keep it up sir.

  • Cynic2

Could the threat come form all those relative in the movement whose loved ones were murdered while he wasn’t in the IRA?
