Car bomb in East Belfast

The BBC are reporting a bomb attack on a police officer’s partner’s car early this morning. The lady was injured when the device exploded under her car as she was reversing it out of the driveway in East Belfast. The attack has been widely condemned so far by the DUP, UUP, TUV, Alliance and the security minister.

  • Turgon, I’ll add the West Belfast shooting to the debate. I presume the Clady bomb has already had a mention.

  • skullion

What Clady bomb would that be Nevin?

  • The one that turned out to be an elaborate hoax, Skullion, but was not considered so at the time it was found by locals.

  • 6countyprod

These people who are intent on murder and destruction are the scum of the earth. And those who aid and abet them or just ignore the problem are no better.

When is the Nationalist community going to help get rid of these people once and for all? Come on, someone out there knows something. Get that info to the right people.

  • Dewi

Nevin beat me to it sorry..

  • skullion

Yes i think hoax is the operative word here.I think with the attempted murder of a policeman in East Belfast and a punishment shooting in West Belfast the situation is serious enough without having to embellish non stories.

  • DaithiO

I haven’t read any report on this yet but my first reaction is that an attack on the family member of your enemy is gross cowardice, despicable, inexcusable.

    It serves NO purpose.

  • You’re the only one doing the ’embellishment’, Skullion.

  • skullion

“I presume the clady bomb has already had a mention.”

    Your words not mine Nevin.

  • Dublin Exile

Less than 20 years after Fianna Fail abandoned their guns and took to politics full time, Eamonn DeValera, Frank Aiken, and Sean Lemass had no qualms about hanging IRA men and ending their ‘campaign’ during WW2. Will it now take a Sinn Fein minister for justice to clamp down effectively on the dissidents?

  • Thereyouarenow

    reply to Dublin Exile

Yes but it may take some time but the answer is Yes.

  • Couldn’t comment – should’nt

Fact is guys attacking the family of your enemy always works – it spreads fear

Likewise venturing into Robbo’s backyard reminds me of the bomb in Portadown in 1998 – in Trimble’s backyard again proving these guys can strike where and when

The way out is to bring the current will they won’t they phase of the P&J debate to an end and then for the Executive to set a policy to deal with these guys – and Dub Exile is right, only when Sinn Fein and the other parties combine their efforts to deal with the dissidents will this come to an end-

So in nutshell – political courage from Robbo followed by political courage from marty

    on second thoughts give up?

    Re DublinExile,

Why is it Northern / Ireland is so full of traitors or perhaps full of stupid ignorant people who fail to learn from past mistakes at the right time – cut that across all the relevant generations from 1900 if you want.

Full of traitors aka ignorant slow learners and stubborn lovers of violence.

  • They were indeed my words, Skullion. Thank goodness it was just a hoax but it would have spread fear and it did tie up security resources on both sides of the border.

  • Hoax bomb alerts create hassle, fear and damage the economy. There are enough worries out there at present without these idiots or their supporters.

  • Dublin 12

Here in the Republic when a member of An Garda Siochana is murdered or seriously injured the country as a whole demands a robust response from the authorities in apprehending their killers. Yet up north with the new dispensation the partner of a police officer escapes death due to the actions of common criminals, and all that you hear are empty words. Why? Surely a vigourous response to disrupting and ending these groups would be acceptable to the majority of law abiding citizens who are facing these dangers daily. It certainly would be supported here in the south.

  • iluvni

    would it?
A vigorous response here would see Sinn Fein and sdlp crying foul.

  • pray enlighten

What is a vigorous response ? I know maybe get scappo back on the scene he could have sent hundreds to jail with his evidence. If i remember rightly the people in charge of vigorous response who emploed him to muder people sent him on a long vacation with I presume a large pension and a mill or two in back pay.
submit word various maybe for various vigorous responses.

  • pray enlighten

Oooops spelling mistakes thats me on the comment scrapheap.
    LOL submit word gone

  • Reader

skullion: without having to embellish non stories.
Would you want such a non-story on your street? And if a bomb-hoax is a non-story, is a death-threat also a non story?

  • Brian MacAodh

God what terrible news. I can’t understand these people

  • skullion

    Reader

As far as i’m aware a hoax bomb has never killed anyone whereas many death threats have indeed been carried out.And no i wouldn’t appreciate the disruption that goes with these incidents but at the same time i wouldn’t be terrified of an empty transit van.Nevin was trying to equate an actual bombing and an actual shooting with a hoax. There is no comparison. That doesn’t take away from the fact that the perpetrators of all three acts are complete and utter tossers.

  • Comrade Stalin

    skullion,

Your comments are ridiculous. There is no way to tell whether a device is a hoax or not. What would you suggest they do, ignore it and have the thing go off ? Like may have occurred with Omagh ?

  • skullion

    Comrade
You’re not paying attention.Nevin posted his comment after the device had been declared a hoax therefore choosing to hype up a situation that simply did not exist. There was no bomb.As for ignoring it,it seems that’s exactly what the police did for quite a while. In fact it was left to residents to seal off the area.

  • CONOR

fuck me! Is this a playground? look at your comeents! Who gives a fuck about your petit squabbling over whether a hoax bomb is relevant or not?! Who do you think you are?? wankers.

  • kanur

‘fuck me! Is this a playground? ‘comeents!
    petit!

Judging by your spelling, Conor, you’d be better getting out of the playground and back into the classroom ASAP.-or OSOP as you might say….

  • skullion

    Conor
No thanks.No.I’m looking. Not you.Myself.No need. Now go away and learn how to spell.

  • skullion

Sorry Kanur you beat me to it.However the bold Conor has a point about the relevance of whether it was a hoax or not.Sometimes these posts take on a pedantic strand and the main point takes a back seat whilst we try to point score and in this case i’m guilty. However i’m also right. So there.

  • CONOR

a typo you prick. Look at your embaressing `comments’ (spelt whatever way). I’d hazard a guess I’m better educated than either of you. And not a tenth as sad. Do you think that anyone cares about your bizzarely self-indulgent debate over whether a bomb hoax is relevant or not to the story? do you really? I’d say you are a trio of pathetic men working in non-descript jobs, who use the anonymity of the internet to indulge in a self-serving squabble which is irrelevant to the topic at hand and of interest to nobody. As I said, wankers.

  • CONOR

skullion is you first comment on this page meant to represent wit or a clever take on something? Coz it don’t! Me.My.No myself. Wa? Wise up.

  • big dick

Nevin described yesterday’s incident as the ‘Clady bomb’ and now he won’t admit that he was either mistaken or deliberately exagerated the nature of yhe event. That is all.

Now, what about that Rathlin ferry?

  • “Nevin posted his comment after the device had been declared a hoax therefore choosing to hype up a situation that simply did not exist”

Skullion, you dived in with both feet off the ground. I made no comparison and I only became aware of the hoax label after your ‘late tackle’.

  • skullion

Well Conor as you’re so better educated than me you work it out.

  • CONOR

Or ffs..`Now he won’t admit he’s wrong’. Who are you Rumpole of the fuckin Bailey? What a pathetic site this is, if this is what passes for debate. Fuckin hell.

  • CONOR

An astounding, deep, profound answer skullion, dripping with cheeky suggestiveness, hinting at an unimaginably razor-sharp intellect and alluding to a cleverness that few of us could ever aspire to. `Work it out for yourself’ ffs mate, are you for real? Never mind, admin at the civil service beckons on Monday, and one of these days those bosses will see just what a clever chap you are! lol

  • skullion

Nevin i’m in a right narky mood and am being terribly pedantic.Lets just leave it as it is obviously boring the pants off people.

  • skullion

    Conor

You want to calm down a wee bit.If it makes you feel less inadequate you can insult me all night long. But having had a go at me and the site in general hows about giving us a bit of insight about your views on the current dissident republican threat. You know, serious debate and all that.

  • CONOR

calm down? bit patronising coming from a guy who gets vexed over whether or not a bomb was a hoax!

Every state has a duty to defend itself from those who threaten it. So just as de Valera had to defend the Irish state from its enemies, so will a British minister have to defend the British state from its enemies. In that respect, the Shinners will, of course, have to defend Her Majesty’s realm from those who threaten its national security.

  • No harm Dave, but what a load of balls. When Sinn Fein attain the Justice Ministry in the north it will of course use it bring about policies that will make a meaningful difference to working class areas (and indeed all areas). However it is the republican community that will deal with the micro groups flawed agenda by their total rejection of their attempts to bring the Brits back onto the streets.

  • What’s changed?

“Nevin described yesterday’s incident as the ‘Clady bomb’ and now he won’t admit that he was either mistaken or deliberately exagerated the nature of yhe event. That is all.”

I think he has already explained his stance on that and which Skullion has accepted.

Now willing to accept the phrase “Elaborate Hoax”

    Who says so?

    The Security Forces?

The same security forces that thought it a real enough threat to seal off the village?

So Biggus Dickus, if such a security threat was outside your home, would you feel threatened/ scared regardless of whether it was later declared an elaborate hoax?

  • bri

  • If these idiots with their car bombs etc. are known they should be named and shamed in newspapers across the island. They need to be outed in the interests of public safety and political stability. They enjoy next to zero support (except from the delusional few). Also, they should be electroncially tagged and monitored 24/7. Enough with the softly, softly approach. Gloves need to be taken off with these nut jobs north and south.

You aren’t under the impression that what is devolved will be anything more than symbolic? You aren’t seriously labouring under the illusion Westminster is about to surrender control over operational security matters?

If you have any doubts then I’d suggest you have a look at the nice new shiny MI5 headquarters in Palace Barracks.

  • oh dear me

Which will not happen for many years even if devolution occurs soon.

it will of course use it bring about policies that will make a meaningful difference to working class areas (and indeed all areas).

Yeah, like they’re doing with education.

  • Brian MacAodh

what are the chances they catch these idiots

  • cynic

There is an astounding lack of condemnation of the carbomb on this thread, instead some idiots obsessing over what a hoax is.

Catch a grip before irreparable damage is done to the once great Slugger O Toole.
