“the opportunities a single island market can present”

Apparently the Northern Ireland Regional Development Minister, Sinn Féin’s Conor Murphy, has been adressing those gathered at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Lunch at the Culloden Hotel.

“The importance of inter-trade on a North/South basis is also of critical importance in going forward, for the development of the island economy and the opportunities a single island market can present local businesses.”

Which is fine. Although those in the other part of the island may not agree..

    Apparently?

You suspect that he may not have addressed them or have some doubt about the source?

  • Pete Baker

Well, Jer, I couldn’t find confirmation of it on the normally prompt SF website.

    Pete,
    I may have missed something.
Are you now blogging about what sinn fein don’t say, and even giving us links to where they didn’t say anything.and then saying that you usually get confirmation from what they normally promptly say.

What I would like to know is did Murphy refer to Cowan’s recent comments about looking after “our own” – or Lennihan’s other comemnts about north south shoppers supporting the British Exchequer ?

You cant give a speech like that in Belfast today without referring to the elephant in the room – it is just cowardly and dishonest.

Conor should have said ‘the opportunities a single island economy can present’ are dwarfed by those immediately next to us in GB and the wider single market.
But if he did that he would live in the real world. Recession anyone?

Local businesses? Aren’t London financial firms looking at relocating to ROI?

I am sure they are taking advice from Reg Empty not.

In what way could traffic flows alter?
People who know fuck all should keep quiet ra

Conor needs to keep reminding the Free State FF (ta ar la imithe) government that it must try and see the bigger picture.

  • igor

Which one would imagine is an opportunity, rather than a crisis.

  • “the opportunities a single island market can present”

At present, Conor seems to have difficulty sorting out the single island market that is Rathlin 🙂

  • hmm

I’ve yet to hear anyone actually spell out the ‘opportunities a single island market can present’ other than the creation of more tax payer funded quangos.
