Ireland beaten in dead rubber

Just a quickie. Ireland lost to India in their final group game in the World Twenty20 this evening. On a damp evening at Trent Bridge with Niall O’Brien and Trent Johnston missing the gulf between the sides was apparent as Zaheer Khan took 4 wickets and Ireland struggled to 112-8 from their 18 overs. India cruised home by 8 wickets with over 2 overs to spare. The big super eight games start tomorrow with New Zealand Ireland’s opponents, again in Nottingham with the Irish likely to be at full strength.

    Dave, few boring bits at the moment with pointless games for teams already in or out of the super8s

    Don’t want to jinx it but there is hint that Ireland could get a win tomorrow, the kiwis seem to be struggling to get a fit 11 together.

    I wonder if its coincidence that Joyce put in a century for Sussex this week, I wonder if he’s possibly rueing jumping ship, as Morgan probalby is.

    Niall O Brian is also missing from this game.

    Kiwis look vulnernable if Ireland get run of the green;
    Irish skipper William Porterfield lamented the absence of experienced seamer Johnston and said: “Trent on that pitch would have been a big help to us.

    “The wicket did a bit early on and they landed it in the right areas,” he said.

    “But I thought we fought back really well and posted a fairly competitive total.”

    Looking ahead to the Super Eight phase he added: “There’s an upset in us.”
