Ireland close to opening win in World Twenty20

Dave’s been twittering away from Trent Bridge where Ireland won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat. Set a target of 138 to win, Ireland started slowly but steadily and are currently on 105 for 4 from 16 overs. An opening win is within reach. Now 138-4 from 18.2 overs. An opening win for Ireland in the ICC World Twenty20! Update It also puts Bangladesh out of the competition and Ireland guaranteed to go through to the Super8s even before they face India on June 10. Adds In comparison, Australia’s second defeat means they are also out of the competition.

Oracles, so obsessed with the future to notice the recent past.

    Great stuff for the team.

Mr. Baker, any idea as to the size of the cricket playing pool in Ireland? I’m guessing it’s a tad smaller than in Bangladesh

    Mr. Cowboy

I don’t know off-hand, but there are a few cricket-heads reading Slugger who might be able to estimate that for you.

I dusted off my laziness and found that, according to the ICU, the pool [including younger players] is roughly 8,000 to 9,000.

Granted, there are a few players who are playing due to naturalization clauses but it’s still a quite remarkable achievement to beat populous nations where cricket is the main sport.

Clady, one batting partnership for Ireland today was an electrican and a carpenter, that aside, Ireland currently have a really good infrastructure and are bringing some good kids through.

True we have several *foreigners* in the squad (Cricket rules are different) but on the flipside we did lose Ed Joyce to England in 2007 and Eoin Morgan has just been selected for them aswell. Possibly they will now be eyeing up O’Brien and Rankin.

Finally Bangladesh ain’t that good we beat them in the one day world cup in 2007.

  • I really congrats Ireland team it is a tremendous win against Bangladesh. My west wishes for Ireland team to win for upcoming matches.

The game isn’t really my thing but well done Ireland. I’ve actually watched some of the games on Sky.

Well done Ireland on beating another Test playing nation. Surely it is time for the I.C.C to give Ireland Test status as we can at least mix it with Bangladesh. It would also stop the influx of our best cricketers into the England team.

Good luck against India, and then for the Super 8’s guys!
