DUP told not challenge the authority of the chair (then walk out)…

The Minister of Health was available in the Stormont Assembly chamber this morning for questions on Swine Flu and other pressing matters of public health. Yet the largest party, the DUP was not even present. Why not? Because they did not like the Speaker’s ruling at the beginning of the session on that torrent of points of order last week, in which as Roe Valley Socialist notes, “MLAs get paid £43,000 a year yet Poots is willing to pretty much put on the record that he is too lazy to listen to speeches and is then prepared to ask a question on a speech he has not heard”. (Mark Devenport has the details here) We don’t have the wording, but he viewed the various points of order as an egregious challenge to the authority of the Chair, and they were ordered to desist from such behaviour in future… So out they trooped after Willie McCrea… Not sure how this is going to play out this afternoon, since Sammy Wilson is due to take Environment questions… Keep watching this space…

Do any of the local papers do a regular column that reports on the events of each Assembly sitting ?

The public need to know that this childish crap is going on. I did notice McCrea’s complaint in Hansard last week. Hansard for today isn’t available yet but it sounds like the Speaker has upheld the deputy Speaker’s ruling – quite correctly.

The fact that the DUP are in a huff is, of course, a sign that the Speaker is probably doing his job well.

The public are only too aware that this sort of behaviour is par for the course at the joke that is the Stormont Assembly. They’re just too apathetic to give a toss.

A former employer of mine had a rule for that: No work, no pay.

Who cares so long as they don’t start shooting at us again.

And as long as someone else is paying for the whole show that is exactly how it will remain.

Regardless of other areas of expenditure, it would be a good idea to have a specific local rate that pays entirely and exclusively the costs of the Assembly (including salaries, allowances, office costs, etc). Then people would be very very motivated to know what their money was being spent on, and demand both efficiency and accountability.

More and more people do give a toss. It’s getting folk to vote along lines other than green or orange; I understand the difficulty in this, being an erstwhile SF voter no matter what, up until the last election when we were going for the worker independent kid from the West. This year I reckon I’ll not vote at all.

    Don’t be daft.

Did they actually walk out, or just McCrea? Given that the first order of business was a statement by Sammy Wilson and there were three DUP MLA’s sitting directly behind him, it was hardly a walk-out!!
