Ted’s knighthood sparks ructions on the right…

BROWN’S announcement that “a great friend” and former Irish republican cheerleader Ted Kennedy is to get a knighthood has gone down like a lead balloon with the Tories, and the right-wing Press (as typified by the Daily Mail) is apoplectic. The DUP spokesman was more gloating: “How times have changed. One of the great champions of Irish nationalism on Capitol Hill receiving an honorary knighthood.” It’s a bit contradictory all right, but I guess Kennedy’s ill health will mean not much will come of it. One wonders why Brown bothered. I guess he’s just trying to ingratiate himself with Obama…

  • Jimmy Sands

Why is he regarded as a chuckie? Can’t see it myself.

  • KieranJ

Jimmy Sands is correct. Ted Kennedy and the rest of his family, going back to the founding father, Joe, have used the Irish card to propel their own interests over many years.

My question is this. Why in the world would anyone want to be knighted by a British monarch? Thousands of these “sir knights” have been shown to be perverts, thieves, moral cripples and half-wits. The queen drops a sword on the shoulder of some of the worst bastards known to humanity.

  • Robert Keogh

I guess he’s just trying to ingratiate himself with Obama…

A knighthood from the state that tortured his grandfather, put almost the entire rural Kenyan population into concentration camps, ran death squads that murdered and raped his countrymen…. Yeah I can see how that would curry favour.

    *rolls eyes*

  • Greenflag

    jimmy sands ,

‘Why is he regarded as a chuckie? Can’t see it myself. ‘

Because he shhok hands with Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams before messrs Robinson and Paisley did ? The Tories have almost always been apoplectic on matters Irish . How dare any American Senator even one of Irish background attempt to clean up the ‘shit ‘ created by Britain’s long misgovernance of Ireland both North and South . Not the done thing old boy -special relationship and all that .

As for the Daily Mail ? I wonder what their Irish edition headline will be re Sir Teddy ?

Shower of hypocrites . From the party of John (family values) Major , and Cecil ( secretary bonking ) Parkinson not to mention Edwina ( bend over ) Currie and Jeffrey (jailbird ) Archer it’s a case of the pot calling the kettle black 🙁

  • Harry Flashman

    Sir Hossis of Liver?

I’m not sure the Mail is “apoplectic”, “mildly dyspeptic” might sum it up better.

  • Dread Cthulhu

Teddy was, to borrow and paraphrase a term from the forties, pre-maturely pro-SF.

Throw in that he’s a drunkard and a bit of a toe-rag, a real cur of the upper class, and you’ve got yourself a real bit of work.

  • OC

They said that Teddy left his girlfriend in the lake.
It wasn’t his fault, just an honest mistake.
Just for that the people said to make him pay.
But a little bit of money, honey, goes a long, long way. – A friend’s lyrics

  • the future’s bright the future’s orange

    gerry next? lol

  • Why not give an honorary Knighthood to Teddy, the only surviving brother of the three who did much for Ireland, especially in helping get Irish-Americans to give up of Noraid, and lived long enough to get one?

To show the weakness of its critics, particularly the Dail Mail’s fury, they drag in the Mary Joe Kopechne thing as if he deliberately murdered her, and it was somehow related to The Troubles.

While no great fan of the Kennedys, I’m glad he got it.

And I just wonder if anyone will ever get any kind of award about anything without our mean-spirited making a fuss about it.

    A world of whiners!

  • Credit Crunch

    Trowbridge H. Ford
I agree, I’m certainly no fan of the Kennedy’s either, but dragging in Mary Joe Kopechne shows how thin the pro-republican charge is.
It’s rubbish actually, for Kennedy was always very anti-provo, and stuck strongly to the SDLP’s position on violence being totally unacceptable.

  • Senator Edward Kennedy, one of Irish-America’s most important figures, who has pulled out of a meeting [with Adams] because of the IRA’s “ongoing criminal activity and contempt for the rule of law”.

    Robert Keogh:

    Excellent!

    Nevin
Nice one. I’m astounded by people’s lack of knowledge if they believe that Ted Kennedy ever had sympathy with violent republicanism. It just isn’t true. The direct opposite is the case.

And, I repeat, I’m no fan of the Kennedy’s.

  • Greagoir O’ Frainclin

“Throw in that he’s a drunkard and a bit of a toe-rag, a real cur of the upper class, and you’ve got yourself a real bit of work.”

Well he’ll be most deserving of a knighthood then and he should feel most at home with the rest of them……..so have repect for your new peer.

Oh, rememeber Lord Boothby, Churchill’s secretary, who was friend of the Kray Brothers, fond of a brandy, rent boys and orgies.

Eleven Lords a leaping and all that…

  • danielmoran

to belfast gonzo…. the dup had to get their noses into this one, you can always depend on them to sink into the gutter. i’don’t see why anybody should get worked up about no matter who, getting a british honour. didn’t the worst tyrants in the former colonies get one of those at one time or another. it’s a poisoned chalice, and a very stale one at that.

  • Greenflag

Ted Kennedy did more for Ireland than any of the prating Unionists or their Daily Mail /Tory backers . He is also regarded by the American Senate as the most effective and hardworking Senator over the past several decades . He came out in support of Obama at the right time and helped to give him the edge he needed to win the nomination.

It’s a ‘token ‘ gift offered by HMG in recognition of the fact that their efforts were going nowhere in Northern Ireland until the ‘Americans ‘ intervened . In that respect Kennedy I suppose deserves the honour such that it is .

  • Reader

danielmoran: the dup had to get their noses into this one, you can always depend on them to sink into the gutter.
Are you upset that the DUP don’t seem to be upset?

  • cynic

I think this is just a cunning British ploy to open the door. Wait a few years and even the Shinners will be getting them and off to the palace for tea and scones with Liz.

The answers to the ‘And what do you do, my man?’ questions should be interesting though.

  • Big Maggie

    Greagoir:

“Lord Boothby, Churchill’s secretary, who was friend of the Kray Brothers, fond of a brandy, rent boys and orgies.”

Yes, but he was very good to his mother.

  • dub

“FORMER IRISH REPUBLICAN CHEERLEAER” Gonzo could you pleaes explain what on earth you are talking about it. Kennedy was one of thee four horsemen used by the Irish Govt and John hume to marginalize and discredit the provos in the USA.

Is it his moderate nationalist views you are referring to? If so why not be specific instead of just lying?

  • Big Maggie

    Dub:

Lying is more fun, that’s why.

  • ulsterfan

He must be on his death bed—-a good Irish Republican taking an honour from her Majesty.
What are the chances of Gerry becoming the next Governor General and living at Hillsborough as there is no chance of him getting to the Aras.

  • danielmoran

ulsterfan…. if the brits really wanted to send the duppers a hint, hillsborough would be the perfect country pile to send gerry to.

  • Greagoir O’ Frainclin

Lord Gerard Adams of Hillsborough, Governor General and Grand Master Flash of the 6 Counties of Northern Ireland!

Sir Martin McGuinness, Baron of Belfast and Lord of London and Derry.

Those handles have a bit of a ring to them.

Royalty handles are kinda makey-uppy things…but mugs normally have handles. Kinda cheap to hand out such titles too, I suppose.

  • milkcans

    dub
you’ve got it. the kennedys were anti s.f and anti ira. i think it was young joe who came to crossmaglen to meet seamus mallon one time and he refused to meet s.f allegedly over their support for ‘violence’ which some found funny coming from a kennedy.

  • Earnan

Teddy may have done a lot for NI. Some would disagree.

Certainly, however, someone with his character should not be knighted. That is assuming, of course, that one agrees that being knighted by the British monach is considered an honor and should be reserved for those upstanding and outstanding world citizens.

  • Paul McMahon

…”and should be reserved for those upstanding and outstanding world citizens”…and Terry Wogan

  • Big Maggie

    Greagoir:

“Royalty handles are kinda makey-uppy things”

True, Lord Kilclooney should by rights be known as Lord Killooney as that’s the name of his Armagh home. Doesn’t have the right ring to it though.

  • NCM

Hey, is it Constitutional for a sitting US Senator to be knighted??? I mean, WTF?

  • Big Maggie

    NCM:

It’s okay when it’s an “honorary” knighthood. Means he isn’t actually required to grab his sword and shield and leap to his queen’s defense as and when required. In fact, it’s a load of shite—but you guessed that.
