Policing Board endorses Taser use

The Northern Ireland Policing Board have approved the use of Tasers by the PSNI in a 12-3 vote. Voting against were two Sinn Féin members and one independent. Despite some reports suggesting otherwise, the BBC’s Vincent Kearney reported that, ahead of the vote, the Board’s human rights advisors confirmed that the police had now completed an equality impact assessment any legal obligations in relation to the introduction of the weapons. A separate legal challenge continues.

  • spose with the hike in electricity prices – taser’s will be used sparingly…

Oi you! turn that taser off when you aren’t electrocuting someone!

    seriously though…

    The Belfast Telegraph reports:

“The stun guns, which police say are a less lethal alternative to opening fire on someone who poses a threat..”

One would have to agree that it certainly is more likely that you will survive a taser strike than a bullet strike – therefore it is better than getting shot.

Also if an officer is within Taser range (much closer than bullet range – therefore more dangerous) of “someone who poses a threat” then i believe their human rights are more important than Mr Crazy who might just kill you….

    common sense obviously prevailed 12-3..

  • the future’s bright the future’s orange

Bit ironic that SF are against the use of physical force to maintain law and order… I thought that was how republicans ran ‘their’ areas…
On a more serious, note, common sense has prevailed and yet again SF display how far away they are from mainstream public opinion on everyday issues. Ourselves alone indeed.

Absolutely – the problem is that historically once Tasers come in, usage slips *very* rapidly from “situations where firearms would previously have been employed” to “not doing what a cop tells you”.

  • Rapunsel

Have a lot of sympathy with your point Joe, but listen to Martina Anderson ffs , the shinners are no supporters of human rights and noone should ever let them forget it. She’s a fucking hypocrite. Someone should ask her is she believes the provos should have used tasers on people instead of knee capping them. Extra judicial killings, punishment beatings, summary executions

    ELECTROCUTION ENDORSEMENT CONDEMNED

The announcement that the deployment of Taser stun-guns has been approved throughout the Six Occupied Counties demonstrates the failure of those who had claimed to be entering these bodies to hold the RUC to account, a spokesperson for Republican Sinn Féin has said.

“Once again we have the use of lethal weapons by a Provo-sponsored force being authorised against the Irish people by a Provo-sponsored body,” said Director of Publicity, Richard Walsh. “As such they must accept collective responsibility for this horrendous decision by the so-called ‘Policing Board’ within the Six Counties.

“Already in recent weeks we have witnessed the highly inappropriate deployment of Taser in Derry City. With the extension of the scheme, it is inevitable that such incidents will increase. CS gas was reintroduced within the past number of years and its use has become widespread – often as a weapon of first, and not last, resort.”

Both the SDLP & Sinn Fein are opposed to the use of this weapon, so that’s roughly 40+% of mainstream public opinion are against its use.

Perhaps you should have inserted ‘unionist’ in front of mainstream

That means less than what you claim, the people, do not have actionable will, try voting against the European Commission

it is not so long ago the BBC were taking mainstream West Belfast calls relating to headjobs, and nailing to trees, as a solution to joyless drivers.

What did Sinn Fein say about Íngrid Betancourt?

A former Kesh OC today, I was talking to him, in Curleys, FARC were ‘the UDA with a sun tan’. I’d like to hear Ms Ruane call them that.

I also had a meeting with the SF Spokesperson on Sodomy, I’m opposed to tasers being used as a sex toy. I put my cards on the table.

The NASUWT say it is only a matter of time before a teacher is tasered by a pupil and it is put Joltmyteacher.com

I don’t actually know what the Vatican policy on tasers is, so, I think they should be used responsibly, and I don’t want Boots to sell them to vulnerable young people.

    How does that sound?
