New media keeping pressure on Iris

Interesting piece from former SDLP media guru, Conall McDevitt, on the role the internet has played in sustaining the pressure on Iris Robinson over her anti-gay remarks. He notes how Facebook groups have been started in the aftermath of the comments and that many Youtube videos have been recorded highlighting the controversy.

  • ahh Facebook

    now there’s a great resource…

many a political career has been honed via such an interface….

Oh yeah, Facebook, that should bring her to her senses. And I hear there’s an online petition, too. That’ll learn her because they always work.

  • and oh look he just happens to be “former SDLP media guru”

Iris will be quaking in her jimmy choos

  • we are very negative today – must be the rain…

  • a wile melee

I understand the point you are making but you are wrong and are yourself a bit of a dinosaur I am sorry to say, politics often works on the drip drip approach and continuos negative coverage of such a senior DUP politician is liable to have a negative impact not only on the party; but also on the place they help govern.

After all many CEOs are gay these days, remember the BP guy.; and these people do not wish to invest in an homophobic environment for personal and sound business reasons.

Still for Iris and her fellow homophobes the pink pound is probably a mystery beyond their thought process.

Depends on the nature of the attacks the behaviour of Tatchell and others has started to dig Iris out of the hole she merrily dug for herself.

  • “I understand the point you are making but you are wrong”

    always a great opener….

Fascinating watching some of the videos on YouTube. I’m also sure social networks such as Facebook, Bebo, MySpace etc will have an impact on the future voting patterns of the younger generation, they are already using these types of web based software to develop their values and belief systems through communication with their peers.
    Excellent topic.

This could have the undesired effect of causing bigots like Iris to go underground with their remarks. They can do more damage that way. The big mouths will be silent in public but the intolerant attitudes will remain, insidiously harming society esp. the minds of children.

    Big Maggie

‘the undesired effect of causing bigots like Iris to go underground with their remarks. ‘
But they already sleep under rocks.

‘The big mouths will be silent in public but the intolerant attitudes will remain’

Great moments in international diplomacy (Ulster’s Open for Business Division)
Iris in her first meeting with Dick Cheney’… oh our family is fine (all have good jobs). By the way Mr Vice-President, how is that daughter of yours who’s more vile and evil than a child abuser.

I’ve heard Peter Robinson being called many things, but a rock? 🙂

    Maggie,

I used the second person plural they…but if it is any consolation, you can change rock to pebble.

Should I take it that in issues moral the default position is missionary?

Is that Wikipedia site right. If so, Conal was SDLP media guru at age 24. How was that?

  • billie-Joe Remarkable

“Media guru”. He had a mobile with the names of the press officers for some political parties and the RUC press office on it. I think he also went to the Post Office and got himself a pile of business cards for a fiver from the machine. Oh yeah, a right wee Allistair Campbell.

That’s the danger of throwing flowers at people in the media which is why starting threads with lines such as “Great article by (insert boring hack from BBC/Tele/Newsletter – well maybe not the Newsletter) is depressing. These idiots then believe they are special.

Ah Iris … has Max Factor offered her a new sponsorship deal in make up yet.

Mascara, rouge, lipstick, hair dye etc….the markings of a good bible adhering woman!

Ain’t that right bible adhering folk in NI?

    ……or is she a hypocrite?

BTW, did they stone such women in the bible?
