Zimbabwe’s endless election

The situation in Zimbabwe has become no less dreadful. I previously suggested that ZANU-PF’s strategy might be simply to keep the election result secret. I never really contemplated that they would actually do so for over a month. The Zimbabwe electoral commission has now announced that it has started to verify the results (whatever that means). It is unclear how long this process will take. As I suggested previously this delay may have been a ploy to make people less surprised by the need for a run off and allow time for intimidation to be deployed prior to it. There certainly seems to be no lack of violence. In this climate the MDC may well continue to refuse to take part in a further election and even if a count does occur it is highly unlikely to be free and fair.

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported.
