‘Spotlight’ update

Of the eleven men arrested at the weekend over ongoing investigations into paramilitary activity, the four BBC journalists were released without charge, three other men have been released from custody – that report previous added that files would be sent to the DPP – and the remaining four men will appear at the Republic of Ireland’s Special Criminal Court later today. Adds From a short Irish Times report

All four men have addresses in Derry city in Northern Ireland. They are Gary Donnelly (38), Kildrum Gardens, Michael Gallagher (28), Sackville Court, Martin Francis O’Neill (date of birth unknown), Colmcille Court, and Patrick John McDaid (39), Marlborough St. They were charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA, on Sunday last, March 16th.

And, in the comments zone, jone suggests some of those names may be familiar..

off the topic but baker I see you have not started a blog about the callous murder of that innocent man!!!

Maybe in you`re eyes Republicans don`t deserve a mention..

  • perci

    twinbrook,
peteb’s done load of threads on paul quinn..
the callous murder of an innocent man.

  • Twinbrook

Did he use or refer to the past history of Quinn and try and use it to justify his callous murder…

all we get from baker are anti-Catholic/Nationalist/Republican blogs…

Slugger is now the home of the gutter blog….

  • perci

“Did he use or refer to the past history of Quinn and try and use it to justify his callous murder…”

No he didn’t as yourself and SF were doing a great job there. Paul wasn’t a Republican so he doesn’t count right?

As regards the man you mention:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7303671.stm

Its outrageous. But its happening everywhere, in Dublin, all over the UK.
    Total breakdown in respect.

I think peteb tends to let Chris Donnelly do posts when Republicans are killed, and restricts himself to posts which embarrass SF.
    Just accept it.

  • Twinbrook

I NEVER associated the Quinn murder to his past and have always condoned it without reservation…

Are you baker in disguise or can he not answer for himself?

I have continually condoned all murder and will continue to do so…

    bakers silence says volumes…

  • joeCanuck

    You just can’t win, Pete.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Such is life; suffering the slings etc..

  • perci

    twinbrook
I’m not pete baker in disguise.

At any rate I’m told we’re supposed to ignore the agendas of the blogging-team, and deal with the thread.

I find it virtually impossible, so you have my support and understanding; but you won’t get anywhere with this line of attack, except maybe a yellow card from Mick.

  • joeCanuck

BTW, anyone who scrolls down to near the bottom of this page Sunday) can see a blog about this brutal attack, updated to note that it’s now a murder investigation.
Surprisingly, the blog is written by a guy called Pete Baker.
    Must be two of them.

  • Dec

BTW, anyone who scrolls down to near the bottom of this page Sunday) can see a blog about this brutal attack, updated to note that it’s now a murder investigation.

Though the thread is still entitled “So he would be very well known..”. At least Pete is consistent, retaining the focus on of suspicion on the victim and his community, rather than the actual perpetrators.

btw Joe should we start addressing you as ‘Fifi’, in line with your self-appointed role of Slugger house poodle?

  • joeCanuck

Sorry for pointing out the facts, Dec.
    Sticks and stones….

  • Donnacha

Twinbrook: “I have continually condoned all murder and will continue to do so…”

Get a dictionary and look up the word “condone”. You can’t mean what you just said surely.

  • perci

although I don’t condone the way peteb has presented the other thread, hinting that the victim is responsible or deserving of his fate, as some have suggested.
I can’t help but observe how these voices never once raised an objection to conor murphy’s blackening of paul quinn.
And looking back twinbrook over the threads your silence spoke volumes. all you said was to attack SDLP, for darinf to raise the subject.

    So I just think:
Shut the fu*k up you hypocrits, because you don’t like it when it happens to one of yours, but you’re not bothered when it happens to someone else’s loved ones.

  • austin

I do find Joe’s constant aping of support of Pete and Mick’s views, regardless of the subject, rather tedious.

  • iluvni

“I NEVER associated the Quinn murder to his past and have always condoned it without reservation… ”

    …oops.

  • joeCanuck

Then it’s quite simple, austin, don’t read my contributions (or Mick’s or Pete’s for that matter).

If you care to use the Slugger archives, btw, you will find plenty of disagreements between me and Pete.

I myself find it tedious that Pete has an awfully annoying habit of pointing out some facts that others would rather keep hidden.
    But I guess nobody’s perfect.

  • perci

what would those facts be joe?

  • Dec

I myself find it tedious that Pete has an awfully annoying habit of pointing out some facts that others would rather keep hidden.

So the blatant implication that Mr McGreevy’s past was connected to his murder and his unbelievably naive assertions about Tom Hartley were uncomfortable truths?

    As I said, nice doggie.

    PRICELESS!

  • perci

    Dec,
    one thing I’ve noticed is this;
When a Republican is murdered, there’s an immediate suspect in custody.
When Paul Quinn or Robert McCartney is murdered, no arrests ( for months ); wonder why that is?
    Any ideas yourself?

  • Dec

When a Republican is murdered, there’s an immediate suspect in custody.

Well, on this occasion one of the suspects handed himself in. Which was handy as the PSNI declined to arrest him near the scene of the crime despite being identified by locals. That being said, I feel to see the relevance of your straw-clutching and whataboutery.

  • perci

    well the relevance is:
    Hierarchy of victims:

Funny how the guy had a change of mind here, sudden attack of conscience perhaps; but in McCartneys case despite 70 people in the bar… nowt
and in quinn’s case despite 10/15 men in boiler suits.. nowt.
    What I’m suggesting is this:

If its a Republican murdered there’s action; perhaps the 20-yr old was told to hand himself in.
    Or get worse.
When the murder is done by Republicans– hush hush and if you say anything you’re a TOUT.

What matters is who you are.
Pure tribalism, nothing more nothing less.

  • Belfast Gonzo

Four men have appeared in court tonight. One has a familiar name as a 32CSM spokesman, another may well have information about who shot a catholic cop in Derry recently…

  • D.A.

I’m just wondering if Twinbrook is Dawson Bailie’s Republican love-child? 😉

  • Dread Cthulhu

Twinbrook: “I NEVER associated the Quinn murder to his past and have always condoned it without reservation…”

And therein lies the problem, either with your vocabulary or your sense of justice.

  • picador

Any takers for the legitimate government of balaclava-clad Ireland, a.k.a. the Londonderry Four?

  • picador

It seems these guys were peace campaigners who were in the wrong place at the long time.

  • joeCanuck

Have fun playing with that strawman you built, Dec.
    Woof, woof.

  • joeCanuck

    Perci,

You don’t have to go very far back in the archives to find instances of Pete being criticized for reporting news items.
He was even taken to task for reporting verbatim from proceedings of the Dail.

  • perci

    aye joeCanuck,
no answer to my points from Dec or Twinbrook.
who do they think they’re kidding?

    nice one picador.

Finally, I was trying to think, but couldn’t remember the guy’s name. That press conference was also pure gold.

  • perci

    cross post joe,
I’m warming to that view, maybe if a story is good enough it doesn’t need a slant.

  • Harry Flashman

*It seems these guys were peace campaigners who were in the wrong place at the long time.*

    Or eco-tourists.

  • Dec

no answer to my points from Dec or Twinbrook.
who do they think they’re kidding?

Yeah, dream on Perci. I answered the (relevant) question as to why one suspect had been arrested. As for your general ‘point’ (ie witless whataboutery), you can throw that stick for Joe to see if he fetches it back(see Joe, I can go like this for months).

  • Frustrated Democrat

The Republican / SF propaganda posters on thread are becoming tedious, my advice is ignore them. They seem to have no useful point to make apart from playing the man.

  • Muad’Dib

So the thread gets dragged off topic even before it’s even started. Twinbrook you really dissapoint me. Your posts at the start where interesting, I diagreed with what you said but you said it well, always nice to see the Shinners and Stoops at each others throats. Yet now you hounding of Pete Baker is nothing short of tedious trolling, grow up or feck off, you now contribute nothing, are a waste of bandwidth, and a god damn oxygen thief.

    Very constructive!

  • Dog owner

Why such a public display of immaturity and lack of self confidence, Dec?
Surely you left the schoolyard a few years ago?
What are you trying to tell us?

  • Twinbrook

So I made a grammatical mistake and this in some way negates all my posts!!!!

Baker clearly insinuates that a murdered man somehow deserves it and people attack me?

Priceless, T`internet warriors and slugger lickspittles…

Baker at least MUST apologise for his crass remark.

Lest we forget… An innocent man was battered to death and baker tried to imply that being a Republican somehow justified it..

  • Twinbrook

    “playing the man”

    just as baker did!

  • Reader

Twinbrook: An innocent man was battered to death and baker tried to imply that being a Republican somehow justified it.
This argument is becoming hysterical: for starters – what “innocent man”?
Nor did PB do any more than speculate that Frank McGreevy’s ordeal might be connected with his past – “justified” is *your* contribution to the ridiculous hyperbole surrounding this witch hunt. Judging by what is now known about the only suspect(s), PB’s speculation is extremely unlikely, but see if you can restrain yourself if Michael Stone is ever beaten to death in his own home.

Who are you kidding, you jumped on him like an ethiopian famine victim on a cookie.

  • Twinbrook

reader glad you are able to presume to speak for baker!!!

Innocent man! As in a victim battered to death.

Baker, sorry reader, this is just the latest in a long catalogue of diatribes and anti-Catholic innuendo hidden behind the mask of speculation by baker…
    And one of the grimiest..

  • picador

This thread appears to have been commandeered. Th ere are already two threads relating to the murder in the lower Falls .. so why not use them!

Is anything else known about how these guys ended up in court. Where were they lifted and what were they up to with the BBC? Who were the BBC journalists involved and what did they find out about the anti-war movement!? Are the 32CSM criminal gangsters or misguided zealots?

  • Reader

Twinbrook: Innocent man! As in a victim battered to death.
Don’t be silly, that isn’t any part of the definition of ‘innocent’.

  • Reader

Twinbrook: reader glad you are able to presume to speak for baker!!!
He doesn’t seem so inclined to get down into the mire as you (and me, I suppose). I was attracted to your contribution when the word ‘innocent’ leapt out at me.
    Twinbrook: Baker, sorry reader,
I think this isn’t the first time you have hinted that PB might be using sock-puppets. However, the Slugger team includes at least one Shinner, and they can detect sock-puppetry by checking IP addresses in the logs. Even if PB was so inclined, he wouldn’t dare. You need to accept that it isn’t just PB against you and the rest of the world.
