Northern Ireland Affairs Committee chair deselected by Tories…

ELECTION candidate surprises aren’t isolated to this side of the Irish Sea as Sir Patrick Cormack – chairman of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee – is deselected by his constituency party in South Staffordshire by a margin of one or two. It’s a shock, because, according to ePolitix, in the last General Election he increased both his share of the vote and his majority, and achieved a swing of 9.1% from Labour, the largest such swing of the whole General Election. However, it seems likely that this mini-coup against Sir Patrick will fail, as it’s he’ll probably just seek the endorsement of the entire constituency membership. Unless he’s committed some unforgiveable sin, his electoral record is likely to swing the vote back in his favour.

  • His ‘swing’, remember, was in the special bye-election called after the general election (the general election didn’t actually take place in this seat due to one of the candidates dropping dead after nominations closed), and thus tells us nothing of any use. From what I hear, an understandable resentment slowly burnt up into this small explosion (Cormack is just about the most pompous MP in the House). He’d certainly have survived the full ballot of the Association’s membership, but for the absurd way he’s reacted to the slight by the Exec: his chances of survival of no better than 50:50, and aren’t helped by the fact that CCHQ would *love* to palm a super safe midlands seat on eg a female Asian barrister or etc.

I don’t mean to play the ball, and won’t personally attack him character, but the hair OMG, wide-rimmed glasses, narrow eyed squint, and treble chin do make him pretty unattractive.
    The face just doesn’t fit.

“He told the BBC that some of the newer members of the local party had an “agenda” but “I’m not sure exactly what it is”.”

He should ask David Trimble, Bill Craig or Othello!

  • Not much gratitude after 37 years.

    37 years of what?

Ah its great to see some rational analysis in these things.
