McCartney will not play for Northern Ireland again…

The Newsletter has an interesting story concerning a bust up concerning West Ham defender George McCartney. And no, it has nothing to do with the sectarian divide!

  • Rory

McCartney will not play for Northern Ireland again…

Is this story a flanker to simmer down the allegations in the divorce proceedings?

  • deadmanonleave

No great love for the Norn Iron team on my part, but it reads much more like a complaint about the current management than any sort of a Lennon or Keane type moment.

  • smcgiff

Yeah, I get the impression that if he were asked it’d not be beyond the bounds of possibilities that he’d be seen in a NI shirt again.

  • fran

A bit of a non story, who cares.

He was hardly a superstar playing for a big team

  • BP1078

You’ve just spent a couple of minutes of your life telling the world that “you don’t care” fran!
Use those precious moments more productively in future, make yourself a coffee and grab a chocolate digestive!

Re:McCartney, this story is three weeks old! I
t’s very doubtful he’d get his place back in the team anyway with the progress of young Evans.

    deadmanonleave,
“No great love for the Norn Iron team on my part, but it reads much more like a complaint about the current management than any sort of a Lennon or Keane type moment.”

The big thing in the Keane saga was Keane saying McCarthy said he faked injury.

Seems McCartney is saying Sanchez made the same accusation against him so there is that similarity.

    BP1078,
Even if you don’t need a player, it’s never a good sign if this stuff is happening.

Cant be any worse than Andy O’Brien. Anyone got his moby?

  • BP1078

Despite all the criticism and snide remarks from Welsh team managers that Ryan Giggs has received over the years regarding “injuries’, which have prevented playing for his country but mysteriously cleared up for Utd’s next match,he has always been proud to play for his country when selected (and fit!).

McCartney is no Giggs, but his ability to pick up mysterious injuries for certain games was pretty similar. The manager had a right to tackle him about it and if McCartney had really cared about his country, he’d have taken the criticism on board and went out to prove Sanchez wrong. He didn’t, he took the easy way out. We haven’t got a big squad, but every player within that squad wants to play for us, McCartney didn’t and we can afford to do without his kind of attitude now.

Gasp..Cripes! I hope the world of international football can withstand and survive the hammer-blow of George McCartney’s premature retirement from the international stage.

On a slightly related topic, I was in Dalymount Park for the Ireland v Scotland ‘B’ International last night. (A drab, 0-0 draw). There was some sectarian singing & chanting by both sets of supporters, but nothing serious…but even the little bit that there was made me absolutely cringe with embarrassment.

I have to say I also found it somewhat curious that whenever the home supporters jeered a rangers player, and cheered when he lost the ball or put a pass astray, chants of ‘who are you’? rang out around the ground, but more like..’ooo aaw ya’, in obviously fake, but nevertheless distinctive cockney accents. In fact a lot of the chants that I heard were affected in this manner. Now I realise, of course, that the average IQ of the type of person who goes to a game like this, or any game for that matter, for the sole purpose of hurling abuse (sectarian or otherwise) at the opposition players, supporters and officials for 90 minutes plus has to be in the single digits, but I would have thought even they would be aware of the ridiculous irony of this state of affairs. And on top of that the game itself was total and absolute rubbish. A complete waste of time and money.

AND I completely forgot that LOST was on last night, so I missed episode 3 of series 3.

So overall, a pretty crap evening for me then.

This article has been the lead sport story on the newsletter site for nearly the last month.

Some good came of it then!

The Newsletter website needs badly updated. Maybe they can’t find someone bigoted and bitter enough with experience designing a website. Perhaps they should give someone over on ATW a shout.

    Sorry for your troubles grassynoel.

The phenomenon of irish soccer fans aping, yes I mean aping, english fans is pathetic. Doubly pathetic when they add a touch of antiBrit stuff.

Des Fennell accurately derived their culture as ‘derivative’.

The English fans’ culture might not be pretty, though Mourinho appreciated it in Sheffield recently, but it is at least authentically theirs.

Be careful – watching the sad derivatives at close quarters can drive one to the dangerous creed of Irish Nationalism.

You couldn’t have been, because no such match took place.

  • Carson’s Cat

This is hardly news is it?

Anyway, how do you announce your ‘reitrement’ from international football when you only played about 2 competitive games.

On that basis I’ll have to announce that I’m no no longer available for selection due to my dodgy knees.

  • fair dinkum

What about Eire’s thumping 5-0 victory over mighty San Marino. Eiro supremo manager has finally won a match. Hold the front page on Slugger.

  • Donnie

    Of course not Willowfield ….

Or maybe you’re being your usual pedantic tosspot self about the fact that it is the Republic of Ireland instead of Ireland! You need to get out more…

  • GrassyNoel

‘On a slightly related topic, I was in Dalymount Park for the Ireland v Scotland ‘B’ International last night’.

‘You couldn’t have been, because no such match took place’.

Er…Jaysiss I’d better tell the other 2000+ people who were there then Willowfield, that they were experiencing some sort of communal hallucinatory sensation. RTE news also had footage of the match later that night? Even the newpapers reported on it yesterday! For a match that didn’t exist/never took place? Bizarre!

    What a crazy, crazy world.

  • willowfield

The match at Dalymount Park was only the Republic of Ireland against Scotland. There is no Ireland football team. Only Northern Ireland has ever been recognised as “Ireland”, and that is no longer the case.

  • woodstock

“Only Northern Ireland has ever been recognised as “Ireland”, and that is no longer the case.2

Are they no longer recognised as Ireland because they play the english national anthem and shout ‘no surrender’ at games ??

  • willowfield

It’s because both Irish associations agreed that neither should be recognised as “Ireland”.

(They don’t play the “english national anthem” at games. )

I’m told by a mate who plays for Luton that the word in the dressing room is that Mike Newell will be sacked next week, with Lawire Sanchez already approached to replace him. Lawrie has asked if he can manage NI on a part-time basis but Luton aren’t keen on this.

Hopefully this won’t come to pass but I’m worried big-style!
