Do mention the war…

IN a remarkable show of tolerance, Frankfurt’s police chief announced that England fans wouldn’t face police action for singing songs about World War 2. While he was saying this, about 100 yards away, fans were singing: “No surrender to the IRA”. On the other hand, I remember spotting ‘IRA’ graffiti in Koeln/Cologne when I used to visit. Funny old world.

Why on earth would the Frankfurt police object to English fans singing songs about World War II? It’s 2006. They’re Germans, not Nazis.

  • Cahal

WW2 songs? Are they the only country still going on about that?

No surrender to the IRA? What the hell does that even mean anymore?

We can only hope for an early exit from the tournament for these tossers.

  • Rory

With such a stalwart army of shirtless, beer-bellied drunks ranged against them eager for battle perhaps the IRA were a little premature in disarming. But then I suppose, if it came down to it, a stern look and a raised finger of warning should be enough to see off these brave fellows.

“WW2 songs? Are they the only country still going on about that?

No surrender to the IRA? What the hell does that even mean anymore?”

This is, of course, in contrast to republicans who would never be caught singing songs referring to events that took place 90 or more years ago.

  • nutjack

i sang ‘No Surrender to the IRA’ while driving through South Armagh last year

seemed appropriate with all those IRA signs nailed to telegraph posts

would have loved to sing ’10 German Bombers’ in Munich but i’ll settle for a ‘God Save the Queen’ on saturday in Cullyhanna anyday

  • bob

What is the relevance of singing a song about “No Surrender to the IRA” when they quite clearly did not defeat the IRA either.

  • Nevin

“We will come together for our national cause,” he said of the World Cup. “We think only of beating the ‘hools’ from Germany first — because we hate them — and the ones from England because they have the reputation of being the best hools, because they invented it. If we beat them we will be considered the best.”

He added: “If the English do not want to fight we will go looking for them and steal their flags, their scarves and their colours. And then we will burn them.” .. a Polish idiot

  • nutjack

the relevance of the song is that ‘No Surrender to the IRA’ is easier to remember and makes for easier terrace singing than ‘No Surrender to the Armalite & Ballot Box strategy of the Provisional IRA that involves blowing kids up in Warrington while sat on my tractor in Ballybinaby’

it’s about watching Deliverance and not wanting to be the guy that squeals

  • George

I think the issue for the German police here is not just the singing but no doubt the mock nazi salutes that will accompany them.

You can go to prison in Germany for giving a nazi salute and for saying “Heil Hitler” or “Sieg Heil”.

Personally, I say through the book at them if they display such blatant racism against a whole people.

    Or throw even

No doubt setting a new Land Speed world record in the process.

  • pid

I love the delicious irony. Hate Germany, hark back to the War and …ermm…give Nazi salutes.

Although my Dad, who was in the RN during the War, maintained that the senior British officers had a curious attitude to the Germans. Kind of love/hate.

What John Healy might have called…snakin’ regarders.

“No doubt setting a new Land Speed world record in the process.”

no, i took my time, the windows were up 😉

  • Realist

    George,

Out of curiousity, did the Gardai “throw the book” at the so called Republic of Ireland supporters who gave nazi salutes to visiting Israeli fans recently?

    How many arrests were made?

  • seanniee

They all hat the germans, but love there cars and Kitchens. How sad.

  • DK

The first hooligans have been arrested and yes they were English (front page of London Times). At the airport a taxi driver refused to take them because they were drunk, so they vandalised the taxi & got arrested.

For anoying the Germans, the award must go to the Dutch who have bought thousands of replica Wermacht helmets – only in orange.

Surprised at you Nevin, thought you might have been looking at real hooligan sites, oh you know for the champions of England. And certainly not least the turd best team in Scotland.

  • The English are an interesting lot. Remember Germany beat them a few years ago and they roamed around England smashing German cars. Why not ban England permanently from interesntational soccer tournaments and friendlies.

  • carlosblancos

Why not ban them? Cos its not the team who run around smashing vehicles, its the hooligans. Who they do ban.

  • nutjack

yeh we preferred smashing ’em up to filling them full of fertiliser and leaving them outside shopping centres

  • But if England and the rest of the so called UK were banned from soccer tournaments, the civilized supporters would be better off. Besides, inflcting Posh and Becks on the Germans is uncalled for.
Please stop your Pavlovian tribalism and rally behind Team Paraguay.

  • nutjack

those civilized supporters (German fans) killed a policeman by stamping on his head back in France 1998….

and Becks is German in the first place, i prefer John Smiths Smooth myself 😉

taigs yer a sad git UTH
One couldn’t resist that. So one couldn’t. An’ that. Like.
