The £40 million policing question…

IF you have £40 million to spare, the Chief Constable will name the new police college after you! Well that’s what he said when he got the begging bowl out in America yesterday. My guess is that eventually the facilities will be hired out to other police forces, UK, Irish and foreign, to help pay for it. But £40m and a year’s delay is a bit of an oversight… although the Oversight Commissioner is keen that the Government “adheres to its completion schedule” and “stick[s] to its financial obligations and commitments to build this important symbol of the new beginning for policing”.

Hmmm.. clearly Orde’s not going to rely on the Assembly being around to apply the policing precept..

Good point Pete. If the Chief Con. doesn’t have confidence in the peace process, what does that say to the rest of us?!

  • Pete Baker

That Hugh Orde is a realist?

An additional point though, Gonzo. I’d suggest this is another area in which as Mitchel Reiss said recently

As we assess progress in Northern Ireland, it is useful sometimes to disaggregate, to unbundle, the peace from the process.

In fact, a general unbundling would be appropriate IMO.

Cheers Pete. I’ve stuck up another blog entry today that touches on Reiss.
