UK’s Vatican ambassador is first Catholic in post…

HE’S Britain’s first Catholic Ambassador to the Vatican’s Holy See since the Reformation and the first Irish Catholic to become a British ambassador since the Republic of Ireland was granted independence in 1921. Francis Campbell confesses (ho, ho) to The Tablet to feeling apprehensive… possibly about getting his ceremonial sword on to a Ryanair jet!

Yeah.. we heard back on 15th November, Gonzo.. although there is some dispute about the claims regarding his being the first Catholic Ambassador since 1921

  • What???

  • Belfast Gonzo

Oh aye, you covered it. Damn these reader requests, they never check the archives(!)

The Tablet interview’s probably worth a read though.

And that bit about the sword was lifted from Pandora’s Box in the Indo, so it might even be true!

Sorry Gonzo, I will check the archives next time.

But fair play to Francis, he is a good man…

… since the Republic of Ireland was granted independence in 1921

You’re clearly no historian, Gonzo. How much of the rest of your piece can we trust?

  • Nathan

Poor unremunerated Gonzo, he’s had a rough ride from commentators today.

That was lazy reporting on my part – as you can see from the link, in my haste to accede to Paddy’s special request, I cut and paste the intro from The Tablet article.

Isn’t it great that I’m getting an education though?
